The Bizarre Tale of Canada's Literal Gaydar

Like most countries, Canada has its own dark past. One of these was the invention of the “Fruit Machine” – a real-life “Gaydar”. For 40 years, the Fruit Machine would be used as a part of the “Gay Purge” in Canada – an attempt to remove all homosexuals and other “sexual deviants” from the civil service, the military, and the Mounted Police, that would leave deep scars on its LGBTQ+ community.

  1. I mean I may be biased being from the US but this does sound very Canadian. I guess that's why so many of their actors stay after making it here. I'm also going to take a stab guessing this is why they went so woke so fast. Trying to make up for those very recent indiscretions. And they claim us here in the US have an intolerance problem.

  2. The discussion group I used to attend sometimes in university used to have as a prized historical record the RCMP files they kept on the group from their undercover operatives. Some thoughtful soul had done the legal wrangling to actually obtain the decades of records from undercover RCMP officers trying to map out the gay networks in Kitchener-Waterloo.

  3. Everyone is aghast at at this, but this may well happen to trans people over the next few years with the hostility towards the trans community being whipped up right now.

  4. Thanks for posting this It definitely was troubling times Here's a fun fact!
The Expungement of Historic Unjust Convictions Act didn't reach as many people as one would hope of the estimated possible 9000 convictions covered by the act there remain just 9 survivors alive and eligible for the expungement (the last time I checked)
To the ones that didn't make it SORRY GUYS /GIRLS😪
