The Big D: Dickensian swearing explained with Miriam Margolyes and Susie Dent

Miriam Margolyes loves Charles Dickens. Do you know what else she loves? Swearing. So we’ve paired her up with the wisest word woman we know, Countdown’s very own Susie Dent!

Together they get to say all the bad words they usually can’t say on telly. They also talk about why the c word is now taboo when it didn’t used to be, where the f word comes from and find some smashing swear words of the Dickensian era that are long forgotten. Let’s get swearing shall we?

  1. I always heard that F.U.C.K. was short for:
    For
    Unlawful
    Carnal
    Knowledge
and that it was shortend because the Pilgrims got tired of writing the whole thing down when people got busted for it.

  2. 2 of my favourite humans that I could listen to all day! Miriam is absolute gold and Suzie is a serious girl crush. Fit. Love them both! That with added swear words is a seriously good day! 🙂

  3. In some ways there's no such thing as 'bad language', if it signifies and means something, it works; but I hate casual swearing, where people pepper their sentences with swear words. Use swear words meaningfully, intentionally, liberally, but never lazily.

  4. Dear @Channel4 may I please ask you to stop putting unnecessary background music on your clips when it's just two people talking? As someone with autism I can't watch this video because in my brain the music overpowers what Miriam and Susie are saying. It just makes it really really hard (impossible) for me to follow the conversation. Your sincerely huge fan.

  5. Oooh.. ‘arse hole’ and ‘arse’ are my faves; but I despise the use of the donkey relative, the humble ass, to convey the crudity of the bum end. (But I also now like cnut-face; such an improvement on cnut, and so much more visual than dick-head; thanks dear Miriam.).

I love Suzie and Miriam! And even better together!

  6. To anyone who knows anything about women knows they are far, far, far, more highly sexed than men. And generally more “dirty” minded. And they masturbate far more often too.

  7. Hilarious and interesting. Miriam needs to get in shape she has been looking rather ill lately. I know she is getting in but..We don’t wish to lose her as she is a talent we all rather need to get through this world.
