Letās talk! I am the only avid/rabid Beatles fan who feels MEH š«¤ about NOW AND THEN. FOLKS the BEATLES were a nineteen-sixties band. Letās not get overly nostalgic for some Lennon throwaway songs. The problem is the Boys were TOOOOO GOOD at their peak. No technological fast one, can measure up to songs like, A Day in the Life or Strawberry Fields or even Dear Prudence. Secondly why are we still going nuts for the same 60 year old songs. Guys weāve heard it. Hey there are other musics out there right?
Credit where credit is due. Some of the remixes are really good. But the early tracks (before 1964) are mostly VERY poor. I'm sorry that people can not hear the difference between the quality of "Twist & Shout" compared to the sub par "Love Me Do", "Please Please Me", "All My Loving" & "She Loves You".
Exactly , well said, the clarity and more important, the balance of putting the voice with the musicians is totally outstanding ! I love every song more than I ever had before. Good reviews !!!
Hello Matt! Great review! I like the remixes on the red album and blue your right itās much clearer! By the way I ordered the setās on The Beatles store. I said I wasnāt but I wanted it lol I will enjoy the CDs when they eventually come. But I streamed then last week! So letās hope for Rubber Soul box set next year take care Mattšøšøšø
Matthew, i can tell you why "She Loves You" is not great. It comes from a mono only source only – along with "Love Me Do". The tech that these people have used was designed mainly for vocals, but seems to work reasonably well on drums & bass guitar. It DOESN"T work well for other instruments. Any Beatles remixes that now have piano or guitar parts or strings separated well would have been because they had session tapes to work with – which likely had those parts separated already (For No One, Yesterday). On "Twist & Shout", George Martin recorded one of the guitars on the vocal track. Cudos to the guys here for using EQ to bring out the guitars better. Excellent stereo mixes of "Love Me Do" & "She Loves You" DO exist – done by people who have used different source separation software. And have been doing this work for 10 years or more.
That Matthew Street bloke talks a lot of sense. Very good overview and generally I agree with pretty much everything you say here. I'm still wading through it. cheers brother
My favs on the Red album are the Rubber Soul remixed tracks. A nice sneak preview of the upcoming Rubber Soul Deluxe. Speaking of Walrus, I was really disappointed in it. We had the extraordinary Love mix of Walrus which gave us stereo from beginning to end, and now the last section is practically back to mono. I am referring mostly to the strings, of course. Flying around the King Lear play was not enjoyable.
Hi Matt! Truly enjoy your videoās – from wacky to poignant! Wanted to let you know that the melody from the lost bridge on "Now And Then" is played by Paul on piano at 2:38 behind the slide solo. The āI donāt want to lose you" melody. Iāve watched many videoās and no one seems to know itās there. Giles Martin & Parlogram to name a few. Get it out to the Beatles people! Best to you and your family – Freddy
Hey Matt, totally agree with you, the overall sound is much clearer and theyāve done a great job also not bothered with getting new approaches in these mixes specially āthe walrus caseā agree with you that you can always go back to the originall mix that is also amazing, thanks for the video !
Great video Matt..my copy is on back order from suppliers..the anticipation is killing meš Have listened to some tracks on You Tube music…all sound pretty fantastic and should sound even better on vinyl..received 12inch copy of Now and Then..sonically sounds fantastic….
I like most of the 2023 remixes but as I grew up with the early stereo mixes I have a nostalgic preference for most of these. But maybe I will grow fonder of the 2023 demixes/remixes with time. As for the bonus tracks I wouldn't have chosen You Really Got a Hold On Me, You Can't Do That, Within You Without You and I Me Mine, as these, however good they may be, don't belong on a Best Of compilation. And why they chose including only one track from Beatles For Sale is beyond me. Just my subjective opinion. Cheers š
Agree, Matt, about the tech-nerd responses. For me, that just chips away at the instinctive response to a song on the emotional level. I wouldn't swap my – or your – instinctive first responses to the 'Now And Then' single, then video, for that or for anything. I say, "it's their last single, for chrissake, get a life!" Albums, admittedly, are a different matter, as you want such a wealth of tracks to sound as good as they can, without airbrushing out their original charm, or burning a hole of distortion in your eardrums.
I'll never understand why they didn't do the treatment to John's voice on Free as a Bird and Real Love and remix and include those. I hope they'll still do that.
One other thing; 'Drive My Car' ROCKS in a way I don't recall it doing on previous mixes. It seems to sound more raw now, which is great, but this might just be because I'd not heard it for a few years.
There has clearly been a cock up here. Itās nonsense to have the extra content on a separate vinyl disc, and the fact that it is stuffed in with disc 2 is extremely poor. It should have been sequenced the same as the CD with a triple gatefold cover, and the price for this mess is eye watering. Unusually for recent remixe sets, the CD sets are terrific value. I remember when the first CD versions of these came out they were about Ā£30 each!
I agree with you Matthew great way of putting the Red and Blue expanded edition 2023 review like you said just enjoy the Beatles and be grateful that The Beatles are number 1 again worldwide!!! And taking on Taylor Swift in this 21st century technology and her Zombie fans who stream every minute to keep her 30 songs in top 100 songs The Beatles still the best and will be always !! Love Giles Martin remix Red and Blue and I am the walrus! We have to keep modern and get new fans so we can keep Beatles going in the future! Thanks Matthew
Mathew the Red /Blue albums were my vinyl introductions in The Beatles . Enjoyed your revue ! A personal preference I prefer the cd listing as it gives a balanced sound & presents the music in its original time frame . Keep up the content ! š
Good review, Matt. And while I agree with you that overall, the new mixes are good to excellent, man oh man, some real disappointments. I was really looking forward to the new stereo mix of "She Loves You". I am disappointed. Somehow, Giles & Co have robbed this track of it's "in-your-face" power. The left-right sound picture is off and the "meaty" middle, soft. After "From Me To You" and an excellent remix, i thought "She Loves You" would be killer. Not so. And while I think the new remix of "Walrus" is good, it is only good 3/4ths of the way. That last minute goes way too far in fiddling with what The Beatles and George Martin created. And yeah, I understand we still have the original record to go back to, but what bugs the hell out of me? Giles has messed with the original ART as envisioned and presented by the band and it's producer. It is like we still have the Mona Lisa but her nose is missing. š "Old Brown Shoe" is missing entire guitar parts. š® One of the slide parts (right channel) has been greatly reduced in volume AND the distorted rhythm guitar that helped propel the song in certain sections, completely gone. Couple that with a weak choice of EQ and left-right balance, "Old Brown Shoe" loses power and fidelity/mix wise, sounds more like "Old Brown Shoeless Cluster F". š Again, overall, these new Red and Blues, fine. And of course, it's the greatest music of all-time and we even have a parting final gift in "Now and Then". Thanks for lending your ear, Matt! āļøā¤
Thanks Matt. I am not an audiophile either. In fact, I only ordered the CDs. The last stage of hearing anything is analog anyway. The warmer sound people $$ on earmuffs, which also make things sound warmer. Anyway, I haven't gotten my CDs yet but I am certainly going to enjoy them. Peace out and happy listening!!!
Hi matt Love what I have heard so far on The red Album it took me back to when I first Heard Please Please me and when I saw georges young face and pointed to him on the cover and said to someone not sure who it was at the time and bear in mind I was only 8 years old and went him and that was it george was always my favortite since then . love your channel
Hiya Matt…thanks for the review. For the most part I agree with your assessment. The really early pre Hard Days Night stuff was always going to be weaker because for one thing there wasn't as much instrumentation. Overall though very good. For me the biggest disappointment was I am the Walrus but the reason for that is because i know how great it can be. Have a listen to it on your anthology DVD. it's beautiful start to finish! The second half where it always went to fake stereo is there in true glorious stereo! The only problem was that the beginning and the end of the song was missing on the anthology. Many years ago I recorded the stereo output from my DVD player into my audio editing software, edited in the beginning and the end from the MMT. album and I have a beautiful stereo recording of I am the Walrus start to finish (except for the last 10 seconds but its not too noticeable). I don't know who remixed it for anthology but it was great. No one ever seems to talk about that remix and that surprises me. That's why I expected the same now, not the mess we got. Sorry I rambled but I needed to tell that story! š
When driving around yesterday just to listen to Red/blue albums. Car has a good audio system and I loved the albums. Great sound! Walrus ending is weird but I like it. After 50 years Iām surprised I liked it.
Looks like the Red and Blue Albums could well be Number One and Two in the UK albums chart this week with the double box set ( which I bought ) well up there as well – The Fab Four still top of the list
I like the way the running order is different on the blue vinyl and traditional chronological on the blue cd. It offers an alternate listening experience. Great job apple ! Also the different mix of I am the walrus is a refreshing change , no complaints from me.
Matthew, excellent down to earth review. Like you stated, I'm no audiophile myself. What matters most is do I like the way it sounds. I have the original red & blue, plus the red again in red vinyl. I haven't heard the new box set yet but had decided I wasn't going to buy it after hearing other reviews. Now I'm reconsidering.
Great review. Thanks for keeping it as short and punchy as an early Beatles song š And I agree completely! She Loves You is a clear anomaly, Old Brown Shoe is a little disappointing, but otherwise these are sensational mixes to my ears. Very very enjoyable.
My favorite remixes are fool on the hill, I want to hold your hand, this boy, hard days night, I feel fine, yesterday, Michelle, Help!, you got to hide your love away, hey bull dog
We can still get the 2014 analogue copyās for a little bit longer. If u want both for the original mixes get them. Keep an eye out if your red album has sibilance mine does. The 2014 copy. Gonna get a new one soon
Matt you said it plain and simple. I havenāt bought them yet but I heard them on Spotify and I agree with you. Iām disappointed with She Loves You too. I like the version on Beatles 1 better. Like you said you always have the old records if you donāt like these. Keep up the good work. God bless
Clap clap great I am so glad to see you got it. But you and I are a bit late!!! But it is ok :). I sure do like it a lot but there are a few that don't sound that good lol. But to listen to this in Stereo well I do need to get used to it:). O WOW I thought you were an Auto file person lol!!!! Just having fun with you:).I am glad you like it and I do think it will do well for a long time!!! It just might be the go to Albums we all pull out ….. Or CD's!!! Take care and have fun spinning them!!!!
According to the latest update from the UK Official Charts the Blue album is going to be #1 & Red album #2 this Friday! Also the boxset containing Red & Blue is also going to be top 10! Wowzers!!!
Thanks for your review. Sounds great and Iām sure Iād think the same. As for She Loves You, itās not one of my favourites so wonāt bother me.
So, are you saying some albums were mono in Uk but stereo in US or the other way around? I had Beatles for Sale as my mother or older sister had it . Never realised it wasnāt released in America at the time.
As for any remixes of any songs for any bands, I usually like the imperfections of the older originals as that is what triggers my emotional connection. Def felt that way with Fleetwood Mac (who Iām surprised you donāt have in your wall btw). š
Nice looking box set, Matt..I'm not going to get the box set and although I love the red and blue colored vinyl versions, it's not needed for my collection. I have other earlier issues on Red and Blue vinyl..Your review was great and we probably agree on most of the tracks! I just received the 2 CD set of the blue, not going to get the vinyl right now. Enjoy your night, š» Allan
Yeah Yeah Yeah, the Remixes push The Beatles in the next Century. My Ears flies to the new Sound Sky. I Love the "Free Art" of the different Mixes. RingoĀ“s Drums are amazing. I love, like you, all Mono and Stereo Versions. ItĀ“s perfect for my personal "Crazy Selfmade" Remixes. š
I'd probably understand people's upset at the radical remix of I am the Walrus if they hadn't done a full stereo mix that did it's best to recreate the original for Love.
The problem with She Loves You is that the original multi-tracks are missing. You'll notice that pretty much all the remixes are better because they still have the multitrack Source tapes for most of the songs. I found Love Me Do was lacking in separation as well.
I listened to a few tracks of the 2023 remix of the red album last night. For the most part, the songs were sounding pretty good. The way theyāve always sounded basically. Thenā¦.while listening to āCanāt Buy Me Loveā, right at the part where Paul screams just before the guitar solo, (my favorite part of the entire songā¦.Paulās awesome scream)ā¦.it was immediately obvious that they fucked with the beginning of Paulās scream! This is both incredibly unnecessary and incredibly stupid. So, hereās my message to Apple, and whoever else that was behind the decision to remake/remix/tweak and otherwise fuck with the Beatles catalog: JUST STOP IT!!!!!!! Leave these songs alone! They are just fine as they are. You are not going to improve on them. They are brilliant. They are genius. Itās the fucking Beatles. Leave the songs alone!! IDIOTS!

Great to hear Ringo" s drumming – didn't hear it so much in good old mono – So glad Twist and Shout made it – I am very pleased
