After destroying hundreds of Soviet divisions during the summer, the German High Command thought that Russia was on the brink of collapse. The attack on Moscow (codenamed Operation Typhoon), was launched on the 30th of September. The Germans tried to encircle Moscow as they previously did at Minsk and Kiev, but they were stopped in their tracks by the onset of winter, lack of equipment, reinforcements and supplies. The Soviets launched a counteroffensive with fresh troops and regained much of the lost land. In 1942, the German Army would strike again.
