There’s a reason the History Channel has produced hundreds of documentaries about Hitler but only a few about Dwight D. Eisenhower. Bad guys (and gals) are eternally fascinating. Behind the Bastards dives in past the Cliffs Notes of the worst humans in history and exposes the bizarre realities of their lives. Listeners will learn about the young adult novels that helped Hitler form his monstrous ideology, the founder of Blackwater’s insane quest to build his own Air Force, the bizarre lives of the sons and daughters of dictators and Saddam Hussein’s side career as a trashy romance novelist.
New episodes twice a week on iHeartRadio.

NOOOOOOOO I have several John Audubon prints on my wall right now don’t do this to me Robert
me, an ASU alum: they're going to say Arizona State.
What a foolish episode. Everyone knows that birds aren't real.
Dave's "Oh nooooooo" as he realized where Audubon was born and its implication was just perfect.
France is the only nation yo criminalize then RELEGALIZE slavery..
"I'm so tired of being around nothing but savages. P.S. here's my collection of heads"
I do like going back and reading the guys who were anti-slavery in these times, they tend to sound depressingly modern in their arguments, like someone today woke up one day and everyone around them owned people and was like "AAAAA EVERYTHING IS FUCKED STOP IT STOP"
"Its acceptable to take a skull in battle." SKULLS FOR THE SKULL THRONE!
That grave robbing joke at the end was perfectly set up and executed. 😂
I just learned the Chicago Audubon society changed their name to distance from the Audubon name. Its like Alliance for birds or something, idr but maybe I'll look it up later.
Edit: It's Chicago Bird Alliance.
I drive past the Audubon state park in Henderson, Kentucky all the time and had no idea he was evil.
I love birds, but I don't "buy and sell human beings and desecrate corpses" love birds.
Believe it or not, Audubon is probably only the second most eviI birdwatcher in history behind Richard Meinertzhagen, who really, really deserves his own BTB episode. I get that they wanted to concentrate on Audubon's serious crimes, rather than his Bird Crimes, but if you read into it a bit more, he was basically super shady in the natural history side of his life as well. This downplays how important Audubon's made up 'Bird of Washington' was to his career- it was really key to him becoming the famous figure he became- and the efforts he went to to keep the con going. He persuaded rubes to lie to back him up, then said he was going on an expedition to get a specimen. He eventually claimed to have shot one, but that he'd left the specimen in another city, only for it to be destroyed in a mysterious fire. He kept coming up with lies and excuses for literally years. There's also strong evidence that when he was making his famous bird book, he plagiarised other bird artists' drawings when he couldn't find the right birds to shoot.
How do you feel about birds? Not bad, but I would rather kill Son Goku.
Fun fact, the Massachusetts Audubon society is completely distinct from the larger American Audubon society, and is much more focused on habitat preservation and ecological science.
"Darwin and Audubon will have one very specific thing in common." Me: oh shit…. they ate everything they studied!
Birds do not exist, fools!
Fun fact: David Bell more or less shares the name with the creator of parkour, David Belle.
My father spent some childhood summers at the ranch of extended family in Sonoma County. As a tyke, it was his job to feed the chickens and collect the eggs.
He came to hate chickens with a deep and enduring hatred. He wouldn't even eat chicken as an adult.
I wonder how bad this Autobahn guy is going to be.
Before I listen, I am outing myself as someone with a pet parrotlet. A lot of people are weirded out by birds. But let me ask you if you've ever wanted to feel like a Disney princess. There is nothing that will ever bring you closer to that feeling than the moment your little bird flies to land on your outstretched hand. Or shoulder. Or head. Or glasses on your face. 🙂
You mention the institutionalization of science and the contempt for amateurs, but there was contempt for trained scientists from amateurs as well. Rich dilettantes often considered it unseemly to do science as a job, and considered those who pursued science out of love (which is essentially what "amateur" means) more admirable.
You can argue until the cows come home about the historical value of one problematic collection or other, but I never can understand not repatriating stolen human remains, especially if they haven't been made into anything. Like, what can we learn from stolen bones specifically at this point? These skulls will never be as significant as the decency of a dignified burial.
I'm so glad they're changing the names of birds named after people. Hopefully the Townsend's Solitaire and Townsend's Warbler will be included.
Birds for the bird book, Skulls for the Skull Throne?
fyi..the "bird of washington" looks just like a bald eagle but with out the white head and a all back body. – found on a google search.
thats right ….the people that founded our country and people you looked up to are all bastards and did things we today would consider one of the worst people ever lived. dammit robert! i respect you.
I always thought it was called the Autobahn Society.
