The American Artist Who Introduced French Painting To Britain | Great Artists | Perspective

James Abbott McNeill Whistler was an American artist, active during the American Gilded Age and based primarily in the United Kingdom. He was averse to sentimentality and moral allusion in painting, and was a leading proponent of the credo “art for art’s sake”. Whistler influenced the art world and the broader culture of his time with his artistic theories and his friendships with leading artists and writers. His combative public persona juxtaposed his artistic delicacy, and his court case with John Ruskin over copyright claims captivated the London Press.

  1. I've spent the past 45 minutes paying attention, and I still couldn't tell you anything about Whistler… Born in MA, liked "Oriental" influences. Its just always SO much for each artist, it takes more than an hour…

  2. I enjoyed this piece. I have just recently seen the “Whistler’s mother” here in Paris at the Musee d’Orsay (first time for me) and was so pleased to see some of the portraits usually at the Frick in nyc here in Paris. The famous peacock dining room can be seen In Washington DC, if you have any interest. Even though I am fairly familiar with Whistler’s work, I saw some pieces here I was unfamiliar with.
