The Albums I Have Missed – Episode 64 – Rubycon

Good heavens has Tangerine Dream released a lot of music. Vaylor learns what he can. Sean tells us about Phaedra. And how she gave me life. And she made it end.

  1. My favorite early space rock pioneers were Tangerine Dream and Klaus Schulze (who was an early member of Tangerine Dream). I thought T-Dream lost a lot when Peter Baumann left in the late 70s. If you want to explore early T-Dream head to the box set "In Search of Hades" which includes their early albums on Virgin and a couple of live concerts. The live concerts give you a good idea of how their compositional development worked. Sean missed Ricochet as an early album worth exploring. And I will add that in the movie Sorcerer, seen in the theater when it was first released, the music was an additional character which greatly added to the film. I also recommend the work of Klaus Schulze from the 1970s, particularly Timewind and Body Love (composed as a soundtrack for a porn film). Body Love was an incredible background for steamy sessions in a waterbed. I have listened to some T-Dream from the later years but always had the thought that they had better instruments than compositional talent.

  2. "In the mid-2000s Edgar's son Jerome took the helm and has it to this day"… no. Jerome was a member from 1990 until leaving in 2006 and has not been involved since. Since Edgar passed away the band has been under the guidance of his understudy Thorsten Quaeschning who has been a consistent member since 2005.
