The 40 best records to own, according to Esquire – my reaction

Checking out and reacting to Esquire magazineโ€™s list of 40 must-own records. And yes โ€“ I was yanking your crank when I used the word โ€˜vinylsโ€™ in the thumb.

Read the article: https://www.esquire.com/lifestyle/g38331327/top-vinyl-records/?utm_source=google&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=arb_ga_esq_d_bm_comm_lft_us_g38331327&gclid=CjwKCAiAxreqBhAxEiwAfGfndNwO8vrLgfMxb_MKbskfjCTF7oc_-PteVTjDMiEtemlw1j9QtuhRDxoCwlAQAvD_BwE

  1. Seems the article writer has a diverse taste in music as thereโ€™s a little bit of everything on the list. But if a readerโ€™s music taste leans toward one genre, these type of โ€œessential albumโ€ lists donโ€™t resonate for many. My music tastes lean heavily R&B/soul, so I donโ€™t agree with many of the selections on the Esquire list, but to each his own. The few albums on this list that do have and like are Legend (Bob Marley), Purple Rain (Prince), and Kind of Blue (Miles Davis).

  2. When my buddies and I talk about favorite albums we don't allow compilations or soundtracks. But pretty much expected from Exquire that I place right next to Forbes in the respectability list. To be clear, pretty low.

  3. This list feels similar to the one about the 100 Greatest Guitar Players of all time I recently saw where Dolly Pardon was on and ruled higher than Kirk Hammett and giants like Mark Knopfler, Wes Montgomery, John Scofield, Al Di Meola were not even on but Kurt Cobain was ranked 6th best…..all these lists are useless in my opinion.

  4. First time commenter, long time viewer of your videos – was compelled to comment.

(all of this typed before I read other comments, except the P.S.)

    1) The article first and foremost doesn't say that the order is a ranking – however it doesn't say it isn't a ranking either. My take from looking at it is they are just listing them (for better or worse) in an arbitrary order
    2) Unfortunately, there's no background info on any criteria for inclusion. So, no explanation why some entries are albums that originally came out on vinyl back in the day, but others are just "the vinyl version" of something that was released on CD. The closest they get is mentioning something about specific individual releases, like "Diana Krall's voice is made for vinyl". Otherwise, nothing about sound fidelity, bang for buck, track listings compared to other releases (that would apply more to the "hit collections"), why one would choose a collection over a specific non-collection album (and/or vice versa), etc.

Finally, the main reason I like reading articles and watching videos about "best" lists is to find out about stuff that I might not know about or may not have gotten around to checking out. Entertainment and information. Cheers.

(BTW, looking forward to any commentary you might have about the final Kiss shows in NYC, and the next phase "avatar" stuff)

P.S. So many of the comments read like "Get that record by (whoever) off of my lawn! Especially if it's a hits collection!"

    Internet comments are so fascinating.

  5. i think they missed a area the 80's punk a.k.a. blondie "parallel lines" , Violent Femmes (self titled), The Clash "Combat Rock". some of the new stuff they listed haven't cut there teeth long enough in my opinion to qualify as a essential best to own.

  6. I found this interesting …

"there's a mix of styles and genres that are sure to make your guests feel welcome" (from the article introduction)

Just as long as your guests aren't into metal, or 70s R&B, or pretty much most of the music from the 80s, or …

(one other thing I just realized – it's trying to list 40 albums from an almost 70 year time frame relative to them having Sinatra on there with his mid-50s tunes, not to mention the Elvis, Johnny Cash and Miles picks; I would venture to say that even the most revered musicologists of the last 70 years would be challenged by that task, never mind a "commerce editor … scouring the internet for the best deals and shopping trends"; not that there's anything wrong with being a commerce editor – I mean that's fine if that's what you are)

  7. I remember years back when our local Walmart stocked up on these expensive $230 Michael Buble Christmas vinyl box sets 4 in all, but like the infamous Adel Lp, none sold.
