▼Synopsis
Ametaro (Kunihiko Mitamura), a hairdresser; Miki (Yoko Minamino), a Dutch doctor; Otojiro (Yuji Kishimoto), a chef; and Inokichi (Bengal), an acrobat. These four men, who live in seclusion on the city streets, are in fact the “”18 Shadow,”” an elite group of shadow characters secretly organized by Yoshimune to correct the injustices of the city. After Yoshimune’s death, they were forced to suspend their activities, when Yoshimune’s son, Hitotsubashi Soyun (Satomi Kotaro), appears before them and offers to resume their activities. The four men have their own doubts and conflicts about how to live their lives as “”secret agents,”” but when they see the various injustices that are prevalent in Edo, they unite and begin “”clearing the darkness”” together.
This is a delightful period drama starring Kunihiko Mitamura. While many period dramas are based on real people, this is a completely original work. Each of the four characters, Ametaro, Miki, Otojiro, and Inokichi, has an official occupation, and the main point of the film is that they stand up against evil while maintaining their “”commoner’s standpoint””. Kotaro Satomi plays the leader of the “”Shadow Eighteen”” with his performance as a key element of the film. The film was directed by veteran directors Sawai Shinichiro, Murakawa Toru, and Makiguchi Yuji.
