Thaksin free from Sunday, but journalists & protesters arrested – Feb 14

Happy Valentine’s Day!

Thailand news – Former PM Thaksin Shinawatra is poised for freedom after spending a very comfortable prison term at the Bangkok Police Hospital, meanwhile journalists, photographers and activists are being arrested and bailed over a number of alleged ‘les majeste’ offences.

Chinese New Year has been a big tourist hit for Thailand as regional tourists have flocked to the Kingdom, in numbers! The transport minister has put Suvarnabhumi airport operators on notice for their ‘sloppy’ ground services, the Australian Governor General visits Thailand and the Thai Foreign Minister has been visiting the US meeting with Secretary of State Anthony Blinken, to discuss various security issues, along with Myanmar, Gaza and Israel.

And if you’re looking for an alternative to elephant pants, look no further…

Tim Newton Today is a daily take on Thai and regional news and issues of interest to expats and foreign tourists.

  3. Thaksin served several hours as an inmate. To qualify for parole he also needs to have completed one third of his prison term. Their rules not mine. Expect a wave of senior citizens committing serious crimes now as they are immune from jail sentences due to being over 70 and slightly sick (which is all of them).

  4. Speed racing cars on Valentines day with your girlfriend by your side? Used to be a popular thing to do in the UK when i was younger until they put average speed cameras everywhere, and made insurance so expensive for young people all they can afford to drive these days is a 1.2 Fiesta and average speed cameras everywhere. 🤣🤣🤣 Gone are the days of the XR3I and Renault Turbo. Yes, western freedom at it's finest, they definitely don't force us to comply!

  5. Tim I don't know whether you are aware or not of a new tax that has been imposed in Australia I am currently selling a property in Queensland but I believe it doesn't matter about where it's about the duration of time that you stay overseas I am retired here now and I was selling one of my properties and I'm going to get slugged with a 17% tax for not living in the country Australia for more than 168 days I find this absolutely disgusting I was born in Sydney I have an Australian passport I am Australian my whole family was born in Australia and as far back as I know I think to impose this on a retiree is absolutely hideous perhaps you might look into this and give us a little bit of downside or inside I should say on what the hell is going on the Australian government is just going crazy

  6. Keep up the good work, Tim. Nice to see you have scrubed up for valentine's day. The sheen on top of your head, I am sure it would have been much admired. Yep, I'm an Aussie taking the piss. Love your work ethic. Cheers.

  7. Freedom of the press and media is usually accepted as a bell weather for democracy. Crackdowns on journalism and news outlets are likewise often the mark of more authoritarian governments. Where is Thailand heading on this Tim? The optics are pretty bad to western audiences. Interested to hear your take on how the press can operate effectively without litigation or harassment. The situation appears to be getting worse since the election farce.

  8. I wish the police were more visible and active on the roads. A few months of "real" tickets for erratic driving, no helmets, ignoring stop signs and traffic lights, and my pet peeve – driving the wrong way on the road, especially motor cycles.
Yes, I know. Never going to happen.

  9. One of my few claims to fame I actually met Thaksin….. would have been about 15 years ago, spent maybe 10mins around him totally impossible to read I would never play cards with the man!!!

  10. In Thailand, it is very unusual to honk your car horn. Or worse, to make a middle finger gesture. These are clear signs of anger and frustration which could be regarded as a general insult. Also, under the Land Traffic Act you could be fined if you honk your horn for any reason other than to avoid an accident. So understand they are flipping the "Bird" at the Royals when they honk.

  11. Thaksin has never been in real prison his whole life, being released on parole is just part of the sham. Though he really couldn't go far but now he can. I used to be mad at him in the old days but not at all anymore since he left the Gov..

  12. About Thaksin, He wrote a very nice book that explains police corruption and the hows and whys and offers solutions to this long term problem. It reminds me of a masters or doctorate Thesis and is in English, His degree is from Sam Houston Texas. Available at the RTP headquarters Book Store in BKK. It is named 'REFORMING The Police In Thailand'. (I look for the Publisher but it only says: Royal Police Cadet Academy with address and phone number) I do find it interesting that he is a protested criminal who is being taught at the Academy.

I think I'll open a smoke shop next door to your BnB. Hey Stevee, all the free weed you can smoke as long as you blow it Tim's way.

  15. Journalists doing their jobs arrested , while a crook is set free. Isn't it nice to have connections within the military. On a happier note, did you read the article in Reuters titled, "Better than roses: Thai couples marry on elephants for Valentine's Day"? Though the quote that "Elephants are considered household and city companions…", strikes me as being arrogant and not respecting that elephants are wild animals and not pets, that so many Thais think they are. Sad.
