Tesla resigns from Australia’s car lobby over ‘false’ claims

One of the most well-known electric vehicle brands, Tesla, has resigned from Australia’s car lobby.

The company wrote to the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries, saying it found the group’s claims about proposed New Vehicle Emissions Standards to be “demonstrably false”.

Tesla claims the chamber is misrepresenting how standards work and potential impacts on vehicle prices.

Electric Vehicle Council CEO Behyad Jafari said Australia is only one of two countries in the developed world “not to have these standards”.

Mr Jafari joined Sky News Australia to discuss Tesla resigning from Australia’s car lobby.

  1. Rubbish! If Car Maker A has 10 models, 7 might be full electric, and 2 might be hybrid and 1 is a 200g/k Diesel. They might never sell a single full electric, but the Diesel is 95% of their sales, and thev5% is the 2 hybrids. There is no way this massuve carbon tax will be waived on the 1 Diesel model, unless the 7 full electric models are selling, in the majority. Its a total scam, a fraud and how the regime plans to make most people walk!

  4. Sorry I have to say this guys has no idea, car companies can make more cars available but if people keep buying what they like look at top ten, then the car companies will be hit with big fines and will have to pass them on. I have heard this electric council CEO speak before and seems unwilling to talk about or understand the lifecycle emissions that producing EVs makes. EVs with current battery technology produce millions of tonnes of CO2 each year moving to EVs is not the answer, we need better battery technology before this happens.

  5. Let me get this straight. Australia doesn’t have a standards board but there are other countries they can look at and they still can’t get that right. Is this what it boils down to?

  7. You get an efficient car and I get a bigger more polluting car and this balances everything out. Companies with efficient cars can sell credits to companies with polluting cars and this balances everything out. So has anything actually changed

  8. this idiot claiming they don't know how prices will be affected is lying. all they have to do is run the numbers on what sold last year and know how prices will be affected. anyone who says any different is so stupid they should not be commenting.

  9. And that's not all, for the first 1000 customers, a free fire extinguisher and smoke alarm, plus, wait for it, an autographed photograph of Chris Bowen cuddling a Kangaroo Island koala, all free with every EV sold before Year Zero! Terms and conditions apply.
