    पुरातत्व और कला के इतिहास में , "टेराकोटा" का उपयोग अक्सर वस्तुओं का वर्णन करने के लिए किया जाता है जैसे कि कुम्हार के पहिये पर बनी मूर्तियाँ नहीं । बर्तन और अन्य वस्तुएं जो एक ही सामग्री से एक पहिये पर बनाई जाती हैं या बनाई जा सकती हैं , मिट्टी के बर्तनों को मिट्टी के बर्तन कहा जाता है ; शब्द का चुनाव सामग्री या फायरिंग तकनीक के बजाय वस्तु के प्रकार पर निर्भर करता है।  बिना शीशे वाले टुकड़े, और जो भवन निर्माण और उद्योग के लिए बनाए गए हैं, उन्हें भी टेराकोटा के रूप में संदर्भित किए जाने की अधिक संभावना है। टेबलवेयर और अन्य जहाजों के लिए ग्लेज़ेड टेराकोटा को मिट्टी के बरतन कहा जाता है,  या अधिक सटीक शब्द जैसे फ़ाइनेस जो एक विशेष प्रकार के शीशे का आवरण को दर्शाता है।
