The Terracotta Army, also known as the Terracotta Warriors and Horses, abbreviated as Qin’s Terracotta Army or simply Qin’s Army, is one of the first Chinese UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Located 1.5 kilometers east of the Mausoleum of the First Qin Emperor in Lintong District, Xi’an City, Shaanxi Province, China, the Terracotta Army is housed in pits.
These figures represent a category of ancient funerary sculptures. In ancient times, slaves were considered as attachments to their masters and were required to be sacrificed upon the master’s death. The Terracotta Army consists of terracotta soldiers, horses, chariots, and other figurines used as funerary objects.
Discovered on March 11, 1974, the Terracotta Army was inscribed into the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1987 as part of the Mausoleum of the First Qin Emperor, earning the accolade of being the “Eighth Wonder of the World”. Visited by over 200 world leaders, it stands as a shining emblem showcasing the grandeur of ancient Chinese civilization.
