Terracotta Army: Preserving the True Colors Across Two Millennia

The year 2024 marks the 50th anniversary of the archaeological excavation of the Terracotta Army. On December 16th, the first general figurine was unearthed in Pit 2 of the Terracotta Army since the official excavation started.

Do you recall the Terracotta Army as being “dusty and colorless”? Wrong! In reality, they were vibrantly dressed, with red clothes, green trousers, and pink faces.

Why were the Terracotta Army figurines painted colorful when they were first buried underground over 2,000 years ago? And why did they become “dusty and colorless” after being unearthed?
