‘Temporary and bad decision’: Albanese govt leaves Port of Darwin to Chinese hands

Strategic Analysis Australia Director Michael Shoebridge says Labor’s decision to leave the Port of Darwin to China is a “temporary and bad decision”.

Security experts were left extremely concerned this week after the Albanese government decided to leave the Port of Darwin in Chinese hands.

Mr Shoebridge told Sky News Australia he thinks the decision needs to be seen in the context of “the Prime Minister’s visit to China to shake the hand of Xi Jinping”.

“He didn’t want anything to ruffle the pond,” he said.

“This decision leaves the key strategic asset in the middle of Darwin Harbour … in the hands of a Chinese company, at a time when Australia and our allies need to make best use of that port.”

  1. As soon as possible lect a conservative PM say Peter Dutton who would probably cancel the lease of the Port of Darwin and kick out the Chinese Leasee.

  3. well, a decision like this a few days out before the picnic with Xi was a no-brainer. And don't forget – those wine sales are worth selling off a strategic port like Darwin to the CCP 🍿
And there was Penny Wong last year cruising the Pacific islands, espousing concerns over CCP influence in the region…….you can't make this stuff up.

  4. What people have missed is that Port of Darwin would worth nothing without the railway link. We built that railway so that we saved costs and time getting exports and imports out of country instead of hauling things around the coast to either Brisbane and Sydney. The value add to the Chinese is enormous. Michael Shoo bridge said it is a security thing, but just how much does it cost us because we don't own it. Its an economic reason. They brought it after the railway whoever sold it should be investigated because they have betrayed Australia's security and economically. Someone got rich on our loss.
