  1. Any of us, but especially a police officer, is responsible for the weapon on his or her hip. I have no opinion one way or the other about the family deciding to sue. But one of the reasons I seldom carry concealed is the difficulty in preventing someone taking my gun and using it on me, on themselves, or on someone else. Disarmed by a little girl? Come on. He is paid to be a pro.

  2. Although I feel awful for all involved, this is exactly what I teach. I'm x-military, and I now teach girls (and only girls) – how to defend and even conquer – a much heavier, stronger man. But I only teach defence – not offence . The man was clearly "fat", and not in shape. I will never divulge the secrets here, but he is easy to disable. I so wish I know what her motives were. We always think a person is "the bad guy", but don't forget: Police (and military) are fully armed, and have the power to kill – on their hip. But we never think of them as "the bad guy". Yet we completely trust Police (and Military) … yet we don't trust regular citizens to have guns. A little hypocrisy here????

  3. Now they are going to try and blame the police for the actions of an obviously mentally ill girl. Maybe she was living with a huge amount of abuse at home and couldn't take it anymore. I feel so sorry for a young person taking her own life. So sad.

  4. That girl's family should be ashamed of themselves for trying to even imply that that deputy or that sheriff's department could have prevented that from occurring! That was totally their daughter's fault and the sooner they realize that and accept it, they'll be able to move on and have closure and some semblance of Peace in their lives! As for the sheriff whose gun was taken, don't beat yourself up! It was not your fault sir..

  5. So all the folks commenting about how the cop isn't wearing a retention holster, ir is he trained to handle this situation, and so forth. Are you saying the family are right to sure?

Personally bringing up the holster and training to me in this case is putting a band-aid on someone who has a cold, its not effective.

This girl walked into a cop at the police station and grab his gun, turn it on herself and shot herself in all of 3 seconds.

The source of the problem is mental. Especially in light of her family suing the police because of this. Her father is dead, her mom lives in a different country. No idea how her Uncle and Aunt treat her. But it doesn't sound like she was set up for success. She also looked like she knew how to handle a firearm will as she took the gun and shot herself very smoothly, no hesitation whatsoever.

Say instead of going to the police station and shooting herself, she jumped off an over pass and into oncoming traffic on a freeway, is the driver who hits her going to be sued? The city for building the overpass?

Focus on the source the problem instead of wasting time and resources on the band aids
