There is a certain magic in the simple, wistful melodies and lyrics of Taiwanese folk music that has yet to be heard outside of Taiwan. However, not only do they hold connections to the island; the music is also an important part of the people’s identity.

In this two-part special, host Morris Chen shares the history and significance of 10 well-known Taiwanese folk tunes. He not only invites the audience to savor this unique musical journey that combines classical with traditional Taiwanese music but also tells the stories behind each piece.

In this episode, a variety of classical instruments are used: string quartet and quintet as well as chamber orchestra. The mix of classical instruments used in reviving the spirit of these traditional tunes mirrors the diversity of tales told.
