Taiwan chooses 'troublemaker' Lai as President, what's next for the island nation?

Multiple warnings have gone unheard in Taiwan as the island chose Lai Ching-te as its next President. Beijing had said choosing the democratic progressive party leader would mean choosing war, but it still failed to sway voters. Taiwan says China has to face the reality, but China remains stern in its stance as it continues to remind the world that reunification is inevitable.

  1. A more stable status quo than before the election. Thanks to the majority (about 60%) of Taiwanese voters who did not vote for the DPP, there is now little or no chance of US neocon driven secessionists within the DPP being able to cross China's 'red line'. Having lost their majority in the Taiwanese legislative assembly, DPP secessionists would find it difficult if not impossible to muster sufficient support for such a dangerous move.

  2. DPP won, but has dropped quite a bit. Pres Lai gathered only 40% of the presidential votes, 4 years ago it was 57%. Tough for him since his party won only 51/113 seats in Parliament, previously it was 61. Pro-china KMT has more seats.

    DPP officials in other elections:

    Municipalย mayors – 2 / 6
    Magistrates/mayors – 3 / 16
    Councilors – 277 / 910
    Township/cityย mayors – 40 / 204
