Symphony Orchestra Stage Collapse Of 1988

Part of the stage collapsed at the beginning of an inaugural concert at a theater in southeastern Brazil, injuring 55 musicians.

About 100 members of the Sao Paulo Symphony Orchestra and the Americana Lyric Theater had just begun performing the national anthem when rear tiers of the stage caved in, dropping some musicians nine feet to the floor.

The incident occured March 4 in Americana, a city 360 miles southwest of Rio with a population of 122,000.

Many of those injured suffered broken arms and legs and dozens sday, the newspaper said.
