Symphony of War ~ Tactical RPG 1 of 2 ~ Army Management

Symphony of War is a really interesting tactical RPG. I wish more games were like this.

  1. I'm totally hoping he makes a side game called Symphony of War: Mercenaries, where you play a campaign parallel to the story taking random jobs and battles and have upkeep for units and whatnot. That would be perfect. It's still a great game and for $20 a solid way to spend 30-40 hours on your first play through.

PS the questions at the beginning affect the stats and growth for the player character. I'll be honest, overall the story is kind of half baked. It starts off great and then it just kind of peters off. The combat is fantastic though and the music is incredible. The narrative is mostly a way to push through to different battles and locations. There's some good moments, but a decent amount of cringe.

Game got me so hype on turn based tactics I'm diving into old school Fire Emblem to continue the kick. Shining Force is another classic similar to this, but those games are single units. The squad system in SoW is absolutely brilliant, I have to give the dev highest marks for that. It's well worth the price of entry for the game play alone. The music on top seals the deal.

  2. Free actions depend on abilities of the unit, morale, and how wounded the enemy is. There's a base chance and a bunch of ways to increase free actions through different classes, traits and I think maybe artifacts. Arenas are battles against random units that gives you rewards such as XP increases and Class Point increases, along with some artifacts, gold and experience. You need to get tokens to be able to enter the arena, they're a bit rare at first but by the end of the game I had about a half dozen I haven't bothered using because I got burnt out on doing them. The platinum ones are difficult, I wouldn't do them unless decked out in artifacts and T3. They will make you suffer in permadeath.

  3. The maximum squads you get to use during the game is 20. There's smaller limits during earlier game, but it gets to 12 fairly quickly and then 15 and 20 towards late game.

  4. FYI For capacity, it's the normal value for the first 5 units, and then it's +2, +4, +6, +8 capacity for each unit progressively until you are at 9 units. Eventually you get a tech that allows units to be recruited as loyal, where they take 2 less capacity to be in the squad.

  5. It looks like this game has much potential IF they can bring it Home. This is going to be a very odd and off the wall comparison, but, if they can make this game SOMEWHAT like that old Nintendo game entitled, Genghis Khan in some aspects.
