SYNOPSIS:
Set on a lake in the sub-tropical paradise of Australia’s Gold Coast, Hugh and Serena have reigned as the swan king and queen for many years. The idyllic setting hides the danger facing all the creatures of the lake – lurking below the water’s surface are the predatory eels, always ready to snatch at the vulnerable and unwary.
The colourful bunch of characters who live on the lake are all grateful to Hugh for protecting them from the evil of the deep, which impresses Hugh and Serena’s daughter Isis. As their latest hatched cygnet, Isis assumes she is her parent’s last born – and therefore heir to the kingdom. But Serena’s best friend, a cheeky white immigrant duck called Lord Quacksalot, knows better…
When the ambitious Isis finally spreads her wings and becomes airborne for the first time, she is thrilled with her newfound freedom and power. But she is soon brought down to earth, when her parents inform her that she now has to leave the lake – as is the way of swans. Hugh and Serena sweeten the blow by telling a crestfallen Isis that she will become queen of a new territory. Reluctantly, Isis leaves the lake – but vows revenge.
With Isis gone, Hugh and Serena celebrate the arrival of Prince, their last hatchling and the heir apparent. But before Prince is old enough to fly, Isis returns with the evil Hannibal. Hugh is too old, and Prince is too young, to challenge such an enormous and strong swan.
The serenity of the lake is shattered, and the kingdom is devastated, as beloved lives are lost. It doesn’t take long for Isis to realise she’s made a terrible mistake…
It takes all of Serena’s guile and experience, with all the animals of the kingdom working together, to defeat Hannibal and restore the sanctity of the lake for all the creatures who live there.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:
Lynn Santer lives on Lake Muntz on Australia’s Gold Coast, and has got to know the animals living on her doorstep very well. She formed a very special friendship with a swan she called Serena over a period of 15 years.
One summer, she witnessed the events that unfolded when one of Serena’s daughters returned to the lake with an evil and very strong male swan. Calling him Hannibal for obvious reasons, Lynn watched as the male swan exhibited characteristics she’d never seen in a swan before. Territorial challenges rarely end with one male swan killing another, and swans never attack other animals. Hannibal did both…
Hannibal brought chaos to Lake Hugh Muntz, and Lynn built up a huge following on Facebook with her updates on the daily drama he caused. Knowing that she was a writer, her followers begged Lynn to tell the story in a book. Lynn decided to write the story from the animals’ point of view, and ‘Swan Song’ is full of a wonderful array of characters.
It’s been likened to other anthropomorphic novels such as ‘The Wind In The Willows’, ‘Watership Down’ and ‘The Lion King’ – but with swans! The story is currently being developed in Hollywood as an animated musical feature film.
The recent untimely death of another of Lynn’s animal friends, Swimmer the water dragon, inspired her to write another novel set on the lake. Several of the characters in ‘Swan Song’ also appear in ‘The Dragon Who Found His Wings’. Although the main character is based on a real-life animal, the story is not taken from real-life events – it’s an adventure story that is pure fiction. The book is due to be released in December 2024.
