  1. This is a horrific tragedy, the only survivors were young men and it is thought all the children were downstairs inside the boat. Possibly as many as 30 children, though non of this yet confirmed.

  2. This is what you get when politicians decide open immigration is a good thing. They have lost all common sense and morals. The never ending sanction BS from the western governments when they, mostly the US have caused all of this crap to happen in Ukraine to begin with. So sad the western government are basically punishing their own people for this.

  3. When I was there this passed November, the Calabrian coast of Italy was just littered with wreaked boats used to smuggle these people. La Rochelle Marina had over 50 boats (plus an internment camp) in it that were the lucky ones (intercepted by the Italians offshore) and all of those boats were being scrapped by the Italian government. It was a very sad sight to see. I got to "tour" one to see the damage to the interior, the only thing left on the boat was the binnacle compass as all other electronics had been stripped and probably sold online by the smugglers. I don't remember seeing even a vhf radio onboard. In the last few years, the EU has learned, the hard way, what the US has had to deal with for decades. When we sailed from Gib to Tenerife we had hourly pan pan broadcasts the entire passage for a missing wooden boat of unknown size and unknown number of persons onboard that had departed Western Sahara. It amazes me that people with no official papers of any kind but fairly current, if not the latest, smart phone in their hands and pass through many countries are called refugees and not Infiltrators as that is what they are doing. My personal solution would be considerably unpopular so I wont give it.

  4. All illegal immigrants must be returned to their home country with zero chance of them settling in the country they are illegally entering. That would stop all the deaths and the problems. A structured, responsible admission scheme could then be introduced to allow for legal and timely immigration. Otherwise the deaths and violence will never stop.

  5. Wow some of these comments are so messed up. People are typically in a pretty desperate situation to risk everything including their lives to migrate. Sad that so many privileged people here do not have any understanding or compassion for that considering their families all migrated as well at some point

  6. I never get tired or fed up hearing about Alpha Nero. I get tired of some of the insensitive, mean spirited and far worse, inhumane comments. Good on all the vessels responding to the capsize tragedy. Whether required to or not, the captains and crews still as far as we know acted as quickly and compassionately as they could.

  7. Good for them. I'm glad they stopped and pick them up although that's a law is in it? A distress call or someone in trouble you have to help them right?

  8. imagine the russian navy sends a sub and brings the alfa nero out of the island – what a fun we would have to see the cis loosing its prey.
More or less the island can not defend anything so i still wonder when the russian navy might appear and simply retakes those yachts belonging to russian citizens. The subs are at sea so would be easy for them cause who would try to attack them in international water once retaken `?

  9. For the Owner and Captain of Mayan Queen IV, what happens to the yacht's certification and insurance when it suddenly takes on 100 passengers at sea, something to which it is technically and legally not permitted to do ??
