In my mind Christopher Reeve will always be the definitive Superman.

its a travisty that these movies were made when they were, just a few years later and effects would catch up with what these movies deserved, the old effects and campy style are a bit of a barrier to modern audiences, and they miss out on all of this

Now you know why Gen-X calls Christopher Reeves the real Superman. It's not because they saw him first as Superman (George Reeves was my first Superman), but because Christopher Reeves portrayed both Superman and Clark Kent to perfection. Even if other actors have portrayed him excellently, none of the others have been quite as good.
Christopher Reeve waa the son of the original Superman, George Reeves. Google it
The sleazy bellhop was played by Anthony Sher, who would be one of the UK's most acclaimed stage actors from the 1980s to the 2010s and was made Sir Anthony in 2000.
To be honest, I wish there was a version that took the best of both films. The Donner cut has some things that work better but some things that don't.

To answer your question about which of Clark Kent and Superman is real and which is the alter ego: Superman is real, Clark Kent is the alter ego. That's the story that was established in 1938 and followed ever since, throughout comics, TV series, movies everything including these movies.
Until the early 1990s. Around then, the writers of Superman comics were forced to face the fact that they'd reached the end of the line with Superman (and the dwindling popularity of the comics showed it). So they started over. With the start of "Lous & Clark: The new adventures of Superman" in 1993, Clark Kent became the main character and Superman the alter ego.
Ursa is probably the only woman character I found truly intimidating. She was one of a kind.
Only someone like Wonder Woman has a strong enough uterus to carry his Supermans kid. Brodie from Mallrats 1995 explains it. 🤣
I loved this one as a kid. I’m really happy they made Superman Returns to pick up right after this. 3 and 4 were unfortunately not the best.
The Donner Cut is presented as it was originally written before they decided to just focus on the first one. In the shooting script, Lois didn't die at the end of Superman so there was no need to turn back tine to save Lois. Also, thr memory erasing bit is one of the only real elements that remain from Mario Puzo's original script. The memory erasing bit was originally supposed to be done with a drink and throughout the different drafts Superman used it on not only Lois, but also on Lex and the 4 (that's right, 4) Kryptonian criminals.

Reeves ones where brilliant
Ah, I really like the Donner cut version, as clunky as it is, it doesn't have a lot of that really goofy humor in it.
The richard Donner cut is worth it.

The man who plays the President, E.G. Marshall, also played Juror#4 in '12 Angry Men' (the one who plays the stock market).
I absolutely loved the classic Superman movies starring Christopher Reeve! He truly stands out as one of the greatest portrayals of Superman in history and has become my favorite Superman over time. While Dean Cain held the top spot for me for a while, thanks to growing up with the 90s Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman series, as well as Superman: The Animated Series, I've come to deeply appreciate and admire Christopher Reeve's timeless performance. That said, I still enjoy the work of other actors who've taken on the role, like Dean Cain, Tom Welling, Brandon Routh, Henry Cavill, and Tyler Hoechlin.
If you're a fan of the romantic side of Superman and Lois Lane's relationship, I highly recommend the 90s TV series Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman, starring Dean Cain and Teri Hatcher (who you might recognize from Desperate Housewives or her guest appearance on Star Trek: The Next Generation).
For more comic-accurate adaptations and a deeper dive into Superman's mythology, I suggest checking out Superman: The Animated Series (even his crossover appearances in The New Batman Adventures/Batman: The Animated Series), Justice League (the animated series later known as Justice League Unlimited), Smallville, and Superman & Lois. Smallville, starring Tom Welling and Michael Rosenbaum (in my opinion, the best Lex Luthor, intelligent, serious, and far less cheesy than Gene Hackman's portrayal), focuses on Clark Kent's life in high school and college, weaving drama, action, and sci-fi elements into his origin story. It also features some exciting guest appearances that I think you'd enjoy. Superman & Lois (starring Tyler Hoechlin and Elizabeth Tulloch) is a more modern take, with Superman already established as a hero, married to Lois, and raising twin sons, Jonathan and Jordan. It's a fantastic continuation of the DC/Arrowverse TV universe, which began with Arrow on the CW. I'm currently watching its fourth and final season and am down to the last two episodes and I love this Lex Luthor in this series too, next to Michael Rosenbaum!
I also really enjoyed Henry Cavill's portrayal in the recent DC movies, including Man of Steel, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, and Justice League, as well as his cameo appearances in other films. Of course, I'm looking forward to seeing David Corenswet step into the role of Superman in James Gunn's upcoming film next year. James Gunn, known for his work on the Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy and The Suicide Squad, has hinted that this new movie will pay tribute to Christopher Reeve's iconic Superman. 😊

Watch Superman and Lois
Superman returns starring Brandon Routh is a very underrated homage to these 2 original superman movies as well as a continuation of the story from the end of superman 2. Think of it as superman 2.5.
You can tell a lot of care was taken to cast the characters correctly although Lois is a bit of a departure from how Margot Kidder portrayed Lois, I really liked how Kate Bosworth played her character more as there was less hamminess.
In my opinion Superman returns gets a lot of unfair criticism as it falls in line with these 2 superman movies quite well and nobody really had a bad word to say about them at the time.
Maybe the 19 year wait for a new superman movie after Christopher Reeve's superman 4 was so long that fans had already moved on from the Christopher Reeve era. The comics had progressed and created excellent stories to build and re-invent the character of Superman in those 19 years and so when everyone heard there was a new superman movie, maybe their expectations had changed.
The Henry Cavill era was spectacular to look at with the advancement of cgi but changed Clark and superman enough to drain the soul of the original movies.
If you ever decide to continue to watch the remaining original superman movies please don't discount superman returns. The actors may have changed but they honoured the originals and kept the spirit very much alive.
I don’t think Richard Donner ever finished Superman 2, so his official “cut” is basically a cut with whatever he already filmed and I do believe he needed Richard Lesters clips to finish it. So don’t expect a completely different movie. A lot of the shots are the same.
You did the right thing. It's not that we don't want you to watch the Donner Cut. We want you to. But in order to understand Superman II Donner Cut, you'll have to suspend events from the first movie.
Initially, they were filming Superman 1 & 2 at the same time. Then pressure came down hard for the first film to come out in theaters. They had no choice but to piece some Superman 1 footage with 2 footage.
The Donner Cut is great for Superman fans who grew up on Christopher Reeve Superman. We can see a lot of lost scenes and testing screen shots to fill in the blank for what Donner's vision was.
It would be great if you finally do watch the Donner Cut. Just note that there is a 1984 Supergirl movie in the same universe as Christopher Reeve. And a Superman III and IV. However, they killed the franchise with these low-budget films.
There is a 2006 Superman Returns film. It's supposed to take place after the events of Superman II Donner Cut. Forgetting 3 & 4 ever happened. Brandon Routh does a great job emulating Christopher Reeve Superman. And Kevin Spacey does a great job emulating Gene Hackman Lex Luthor. 👍 -OG

3:36 He was the 'perfect Clark Kent' if Clark Kent was from San Francisco. (He wasn't.) The ACTUAL 'perfect Clark Kent' was Dean Cain (in 'Lois & Clark') with George Reeves (in 'The Amazing Adventures Of Superman') a good second!
Fun fact: "KNEEL BEFORE ZOD!" became Zod's catchphrase because of this movie. Terrence Stamp delivered it so terrifyingly well that Zod started using it in the comics. Secondary fun fact: Terrence Stamp ironically provided the voice for Jor-El in the smash hit tv series "Smallville"(which I highly, highly recommend checking out).
