Super Mario Galaxy 2 – 2 – the star in the jar next to the airship

every time I play a 3D mario it takes me a bit to get my 3D legs back, it is inevitable
also, I recall the first galaxy also taking a bit to get started, lots of one star videos early one and stuff, right

  1. The stage selection map replacing the hub is a somewhat controversial decision for this game: one of the reasons it was made was to appeal to more casual audiences who found Rosalina's observatory too hard to navigate.

Back when this game was released, it led to a huge outcry of people claiming that the Hub area in 3D Mario games is just as important as all the worlds. I imagine this movement largely came from fans who grew up with Mario 64 (and Hardcore "anti-casuals" too, probably).

I'm more of a "Disappointed, but it wasn't that important"-kind of guy regarding all of this. Yeah, Rosa's observatory was cooler, but it wasn't THAT much cooler. Purple Patrick Star just isn't memorable is the major problem. No one's asking him to get into Smash Bros or Mario Kart, that's for sure.

Also, for lore reasons, they actually couldn't re-use the observatory for this game, not even as a remix, so something new had to be done.

  2. Death count: 5 [139] (5 today)
    (3:17) Here's your "overworld".
(4:23) Nice Chomp KO on the return there.
    (5:00) LOL, nice one.
(5:57) Yeah, everyone knows you take care of dog time with rampage time! ๐Ÿ˜›
    (7:04) Zap.
    (7:52) More rampaging!
(8:06) Seriously? Your first death of this game is there, in a bonus area, just before the game would've automatically warped you back to the main level? Why is that even a thing that can happen there anyway?
(8:32) Not getting that coin, even though it's right there and you're injured?
    (9:36) Whoa, careful!
(9:53) Wow, how did you manage to screw up that badly?
(10:35) Cosmic Clones already? Wow, this game's wasting no time.
(11:26) Oh, raocow… I wonder how many different silly ways you'll find to kill yourself in this game?
    (11:51) Dooood…
(11:59) And, it almost happened again. I don't know why you're not getting out of the way of that immediately each time.
(14:40) That looked like something you should've been able to stand on.
(15:05) Okay, you can indeed stand on it. I guess you just didn't jump far enough south to land on it at 14:40.
    (16:24) Comet Medal get!
(16:40) Why didn't the game specifically mention that stuff you obtained in the level would not be saved if you exited that way?
    (17:02) Comet Medal reget!
(17:09) That's not an unrealistic expectation at all, given when this game was released, and weren't the New Super Mario Bros. games that existed at this time already giving you such a warning when you're exiting a level via the pause menu? Not sure why they didn't include such a warning here, then.

(8:06) What an embarassing 1st "death"!
    (9:55) It's not even motion controls…
(10:40) Hello cosmic clones! They are mad that you beat them at galaxy 1, get moving!
    (11:27, 11:52) LOL๐Ÿ˜
(13:44) No we are not going into easy mode Lubba ๐Ÿ˜
    (14:42) …
(15:37) Yeah, the 1st mission want you to have a lot of lives (that you lost by reset)

Oh, those are like the star coins for new soup! Like return to dreamland, let's name them!
    Cometal certificate
(16:25, 17:02) You got the โ˜„๐Ÿช™of the stone wagon: Now you have to explore more than galaxy 1!

Yeah we can see it's already more hard than galaxy 1's first galaxy (the good egg one)…
