For years, folks have been asking Strymon for a desktop editor for their “Big 3” pedals – the Timeline, the Big Sky and It’s Morbin’ Time. Well. Now you can have the Big Sky in plugin form. The downside is, it’s pretty pricey, and then also for me personally the windows VST3 release didn’t really work….Would you pay $199 to get these classic Reverb sounds in your DAW?

  1. No doubt, these decade old algorithms still sound GREAT. Which is why I was quite excited to try this plugin.
BUT – as a Windows user I found this chewed up CPU unlike any other plugin (and actually any combination of plugins) I've ever tried – I wonder if this happens to anyone else?

  2. this is a sad cash grab. they literally just ported their already digital code into a plug-in and for that price, they’d better include free lifetime updates-just for starters. it’s 2022. there are loads of much cheaper options with better sounds, for example, JST Skybox, Audiority Xenoverb, Eventide, Soundtoys, etc…

  3. Regarding CPU usage as a windows 11 user. It is about half as taxing on my CPU as one instance of EZKeys, Superior Drummer 3 or about the same or a little less than any decent VST-instrument in Kontakt (that was on the project I opened). In the project I opened I had Did this test on my backup PC at work that was a Ryzen 7 U4800 with 32 GB of ram (so a half decent laptop CPU and enough RAM).

I guess some of you guitarists that want 270 guitar tracks on every song with one instance on each track will struggle, but for all us non-guitarists that are after a great reverb sound and want a couple of instances will manage just fine. 😉

  4. JC in your opening comment you mention that it wasn’t an editor – they already did that for the big sky / time line / mobius – it’s called Strymon Nixie & it’s free
Regards the plug in, I will wait for Black Friday & get it cheap because it is my fav reverb and it would be nice to have it available in logic

  5. Valhalla verb is still king of shimmer and its cheaper. Not many reverb VSTs offer a reverse option though. Also I downloaded it to compare to helix native and HX Dynamic room/plate/hall are comparable IMO (HX shimmer is nowhere near as big though),

  6. Tried and it's decent but the market has so many great verbs, some of which are better and cheaper.

Valhalla DSP make amazing stuff, you could bag Vintage Verb for $50 and their free Supermassive delay for ambient stuff.

Valhalla also make their Shimmer Verb for $50. As also stated here Audiority make Xenoverb which has a broad number of verbs including shimmer.

    I wouldn't buy this at £210 UK.

  7. A plugin that costs 50% of the actual hardware is a bit much, still could be worth it though, I'd have to test it out and see what it can replace, if anything. I think the price is hard especially considering the alternatives and industry standards, like Valhalla, you can get all 4 of their reverbs for $50 each and Vintage Verb alone has more than 12 algorithms plus their plugins are better targeted towards mixing, Arturia FX collection is often on sale for $199 and it's comparable to UAD in terms of sound plus it's a full mixing suite, including multiple reverbs and delays, etc.

  8. I've been A-B'ing the demo against verbs like Valhalla shimmer, Xenoverb and Super Massive. I mean, it's a nice reverb, but there are a lot of nice reverbs out there. IMO though it's too expensive for what it is though so it's a no buy.

  9. For $99 they'd sell and sell and sell this thing. I'd definitely be considering it. But for $199, there's just no way. I have a bunch of wonderful reverb plugins already I've spent MUCH less on (not to mention fantastic DAW options). am curious to see though if they will end up doing some of their other pedals as plugins. I'd be extremely tempted to get a DIG plugin if they made it, as long as it's not another $199 pricetag.

  10. I'm sure they are getting their feet wet with this one, get ready for the rest of them. Eventide has all their pedals Native. $200 vs $479 really tempted..

  11. Valhalla Shimmer – $50. Any Neural DSP plugin that's come out in the last 3 years is still less money and has amazing reverbs. Strymon might be king of the pedalboard, but they are way to late too the plugin market to get away with those prices.

  12. I thought it was just me. I actually own their pedals, which I love BTW, but this price is kind of ridiculous for what it is and what it does with options like Valhalla. I love this demo, sounds great. Probably $79-$99 for an intro offer like Eventide Black hole would be reasonable.
