I consider myself an expert on Dragon's Dogma, in so much as I've played the game since release and have played more than many of the dedicated DD youtubers I watch. I know I'm in the minority when it comes to DD1's leveling system, but I want to have a discussion as to why everyone hates the fact that you grow stats based on leveling in a different class. I have played this game for the past 11 years, since release, so this is where my personal opinion and knowledge comes from. I understand that folks don't want to "level the wrong vocation" and all the other arguments, I just want to lay out a defense for it and maybe Ratatoskr or one of the other OG Dragon's Dogma youtubers can think on it a little. I have a few points and I'll lay them out.
1. Gaining stats based on levels rather than redistributing stats based on vocation makes for more unique characters. If someone plays 50 levels of Warrior and then wants to switch to a Sorceror or Magick Archer will have something that most of the other Magick Archer's that leveled in another Magick class will have, that being tons of HP and better defenses. More survivability as a Magick class is a unique trait. Or if you level as Sorceror for 50 levels and then want to transfer to a ranged or physical class, you then wield magick weapons to a much better degree and split damage weapons in DD as opposed to Souls-like games is REALLY good! You'd also have much better Magick Defense which is a huge weakness for fighters and warriors and assassins. This goes through all the classes, they all offer something unique that none of the others do and it allowed for amazing experimentation because of my next point…
2. Like Ratatoskr mentions in the video, stats from levels aside from HP and Stamina don't matter much once stats from Armor and Weapons come into play, and also augments, but I won't mention those much since it just further proves my point I think. This is less so for Armor, because defenses do matter so having 20 or so extra points of Defense or Magick Defense are really nice, but when it comes to damage it doesn't really matter, and I saw someone mention what about the mid-levels, it's not always about endgame. And they're right, but it's also something that doesn't matter in the mid game. Finding strong weapons in DD1 is not hard, and upgrading them to be even stronger is not hard. You might have to google where to find the mats, I've played the game for 11 years now and still have to google where to find lodestones or what-have-you, but for damage it really doesn't matter if you've leveled as Sorceror and now want to go Warrior, you'll always be able to find a decent two-hander, probably a good magick one too, and be able to upgrade it fairly easily to be near on par with a straight leveled Warrior. What difference does it make if you kill a Chimera with a single Arc of Obliteration or need to do a couple more basic attacks afterward?
3. Most importantly, it made your pawns unique. Someone could go down through the list of hireable pawns and see your mage or strider pawn with the skills they desired and hire it, and unbeknownst to them you leveled it as a fighter and mage to give it way better defenses, plus debilitation resist augments, plus sinew to carry more stuff, etc. It'd be different from everyone else's pawns and move away from what I've seen the pawn rental boards become which is making the exact same builds, exact same levels at the exact same times eg. 10-200 Assassin, 10-200 Sorceror builds trying to maximize damage at the expense of having something that is wholly yours and unique!
My favorite vocation is the strider, it's the most fun class in DD1 and has bonus damage when climbing monsters, but you better believe that my second favorite class is Sorceror and I play that more than I play strider because the Magick is so amazing! I play Ranger because I like leveling and getting extra stamina from level ups to do more abilities without getting tired, but also because 10 fold flurry is an amazingly fun skill! My builds are always all over the place, I play what's fun and that's what's important, but it's really frustrating when so many in the community get so bent out of shape over minmaxing and ekeing out 1 more point of Magick Attack when they don't like playing Sorceror and then go to complain about having to play Sorceror. DON'T! I don't get it, it's infuriating.
Hey Ratatoskr, I doubt you're gonna see this but I'm a long time viewer and wanted to thank you for all the content you've made so far. The way you can concisely and succinctly talk about topics always makes you a joy to watch. Hope you stay well and have a good one.
Oh wow ppl didn't play dd1. There were 4 hockey (dpad), and u can place any consumable there including lantern. I played the original ps3 one and the ddda version and at the fking beginning they say L1+R1 and whatever key pad short cut ubassigned the item. By default lantern was L1+R1 up
I'm so grateful to Kentaro Miura for providing the material that led to Dragon's Dogma's art direction. That gritty aliveness is all in Gransys' world, and the expressive faces and movements of the creatures of the world are so good.
Tbf I think it’s posssible he maybe have lied about the vocations if he actually has a new trailer about to come out at the digital showcase on Thursday and was lying so that it would be a surprise.
as far as im aware having played dark arisen fully once and once more recently before dragon's dogma is released, the healing items in DD1 could only have a hotkey if playing KB/M, for controller i could not hotkey heals or stamina items, however from what i've seen of DD2 it seems now there is a Dpad hotkey on controllers specificallt for healing, stamina, lantern and something else i don't recall atm, so the problem is somewhat mitigated, what would be your issue with a system like this if it has hotkeys? personally for me it doesn't seem that bad cheers
So everyone seems stuck on the vocation thing, but you can have 2 vocations according to the action trailer. Or is that the problem? Like, you could have 2 vocations in the first game and there were more vocations?
I am not much of bow guy at all. But I love those magic effects shown on bow gameplay. like If I can freeze giants and use that richoset arrow. I am gona play that vocation first. no questions.
THE WIND IS PUSHING MEEEEEE

I dont like the 1way fight option for every class overall for Magick archer you dont have the daggers anymore.
Put these foolish ambitions to rest

Advice from someone who shouldn’t give advice. You probably won’t get invited to these events unless you show your face
