  1. Looking at this area on google maps is insane! You can see the streets, but no buildings. It’s truly EERIE! The first time I went there, it was actually by accident. My husband and I live in Delaware and we had just finished putting a lift-kit and off-road tires onto our old Jeep and we spent the night camping on top of a mountain, in the middle of nowhere, Pennsylvania. In the morning, we wanted to go driving around and checking out the local area so I got on my phone to see if I could make out a good route to get down off of the mountain And I see we are right next to the town of Centralia, but I couldn’t figure out why the map looked so funny. Then, it clicked and I said to my husband, “OMG! I think that’s the town that’s been on fire for 50+ years!” It was creepy as hell and definitely worth a stop in if you’re ever in the area.

  2. I lived in an apartment in Colorado that had high levels of carbon monoxide inside. It is the most painful thing I've ever experienced, and so slow. I thought I had COVID originally. I can't imagine what these residents went through.

  3. Sadly it sounds as if Robert Morris was a victim of the age old adage that no good deed goes unpunished I hate that f**** saying but sadly it is a fact of the universe.

  4. Loved this!!! I sent it to my daughter who lives in PA now and is interested in their history. I’d love more history and things from you. I love the true crime, especially crime weekly, but like you said, this is a nice break but I still get your in-depth research and great story-telling style. Keep up the great work!

  5. It also shows you that the country you assist through lending funds that were never paid back would also turn on you and throw you in prison for not paying your debts? Oh, the irony is thick here. The US has always been corrupt and selfish.

  6. I know there is no way for you to know this. Reading is Redding. It’s spelled reading but pronounced Redding and I kinda thought everyone knew this due to monopoly but now I realize most people say it wrong. I was born there.

  7. I live about 20 miles away from Centralia and know one of the families that still live there. It’s so cool that you’re covering a story literally close to home! Sadly, they recently covered up the graffiti highway that drew so many people there. Also, I know we have weird names that are hard to pronounce…Reading is pronounced like “red”-ing. Like the color. I also heard you say Shell -something which I’m assuming you were trying to say Schuylkill. My area says the “schuyl-kill” like school. Some other areas say it like school-kull.

  9. Former Central PA residents here. Centralia is northeast and not southeast of Philadelphia. Have to be careful out there. While there's almost no one left in Centralia, the surrounding towns are relatively poor and sundown towns. During the cold weather, it's eerie to see the smoke rising from the ground and graves in the town cemetery.

  10. What a wonderful surprise!! I loved this series when you started posting it.

Your talent for storytelling spans so many topics beyond true crime. As much as I do enjoy your regular content, you’re right – sometimes it’s nice to have something different on tap. Thanks for all your hard work, Steph!

  11. 😂 you never sell land for any reason back then, especially if he was Irish. Haven't we learned anything through the movie "Far and Away"? lol The father's death bed speech "LAND" lol when the father died, then died, then died, then finally died lol

  12. I don't know if it was possible, but who believes "Father von Curse" would have lit the coal on fire that resulted in the fulfillment of his own curse if he could have, or he simply knew the probabilities.

  13. Oh my gosh. I literally love you so much. I was thinking about the reading rainbow and singing the song before you did 😂 (listening to this episode while at work decorating cakes at Walmart ❤)

  14. I'm sorry but I have to ask, WHY in the hell would the community place a dump anywhere near where they bury and memorialize their deceased loved ones? ESPECIALLY when the community had celebrated that holiday prior to that? That sounds horribly thoughtless on the community, doesn't it? I don't mean to "victim blame" but it sounds like they ended up being the victims of poor planning and unfortunate events.

  15. We absolutely DO NOT have to hate our American heritage!! Urgh… we should be proud of it, obviously there were some things we'd prefer didn't happen – and yet, we still live in the greatest country in the world (for now).

  19. I'm really surprised and disappointed by your comments about it being "popular" to dislike colonizers who stole land and killed so many native Americans. Or that people would like to stop glorifying racists and salve owners.
It's fine to discuss the great things these people did but it's super disrespectful of you to brush off why these thoughts and actions are being voiced and seen

  20. Hey gal!!! Love ya! Steph here from Denver and regarding Reading Railroad…. I was just in Phillie this past weekend and went to the Reading Market where a wonderful local named Tootsie schooled me on the history of the Reading Railroad (pronounced ‘Redding’) and said that it is in fact the same RR from monopoly and the last stop there in DT Phillie! Great history surrounding that and thanks for all you do!!!
