I've painted many Dwarves and have always done this on their beards. It's a really good use-case for it 🙂

I've done this a bunch of times when painting chainmail for my chaos marines. With the rise of wetblending for smoother gradients, it seems that these kinds of techniques get discussed and taught less often.

You can do the same with a flat brush to do a larger area more effectively. Or edge large straight lines like vehicle panel corners.
I feel I've always used the side of my brush when appropriate… but then again, I'm not a canvas painter.
Honestly, more details makes it easier, but it does take longer

For a moment I thought my cat was doing that purring as he's sleeping on my neck.
I have been using this technique for years on things like chainmail, hair and feathers. That being said, I hadn't really put this much thought into the process and having an in depth analysis is really helpful.

Also I have done a similar technique before. But it is one of those not super obvious techniques
I did it on the chainmail capes of my son's Deathguard monsters.
I've been doing this for years and assumed everyone else was too. Your tutorial was more in depth than what I usually do though, and has given me a few ideas. Great video!
I wonder if a makeup sponge would be useful for this technique. I may have to try it.

This is just the dry brushing from the 1980s before we had those round brushes.
my (orange) cat wants snuggles when i paint as well. BUT max snuggles and attention when I am using a sewing machine (regular, topstitch, serger—no evident concern re: machine movement speed or noise).
I have considered making a snuggle sack for her.

I use this technique for hair and highly textured stuff. It’s a great way to hit the high points without drowning the recesses!

Thank you for the video! You might try this out with a flat brush or a filbert. I've done similar things with success with these brushes.
I wouldn't have thought to use the side of a round brush that way, so thank you. I definitely have minis with numerous shallow details that are a pain to highlight.

Just dry brush using a flat wide brush. Wont go in the gaps. Thats why they have flat dry brushes in different sizes for doing this exact thing.
Army Painter should make a variant of that purple color and call it Lylac Mev 😄

Nice video Lyla! lately for details like this, or the raised bits of a grated floor or other texture like that which i need to have strong color contrast but drybrushing would be too unruly i have been going 'off brush' entirely — small neatly cut bits of dense open cell foam and very thin paints. dabs and streaks both work fantastically and allow me to do things like make the 'stroke' in a perfect 90 degree corner
Back when I started painting minis, this was how I understood drybrush, and how I was applying it on my models, expecially when doing chain-mail…then I corrected my technique, forgetting another one that was valid as well… take that games workshop employees, I wasn't so wrong! Also it worked much better than any result I got after learning "proper" dry brush… I really liked how the rings turned out back then

This is a technique most painters already use, along with drybrushing, they're both useful techniques, but the absolute audacity you have for thinking you "developed" this technique is hilarious. But hey I guess lots of youtubers LIE to get views right?
I've done this before but as a noob it never occurred to me how to fix them when they ended up having the same problem..so thanks for that fix.
I think this brush movement is intuitive but it also takes deeper knowledge to get it right.
Are cats required for this technique? I don't really have one on hand. Are there any substitutes that would work?
This isn't new this has been around for a long time, I use a flat brush to get the same result.

I so love it when Youtube painters are like "Stop, I've invented something new" and then procedes to explain a technique that is well-known, and basically the same thing as what they're telling us not to do. 😬 You're just edge-highlighting with the flat side of the brush (which is how most a taught to edge-highlight in the first). I'll just stick with careful drybrushing rather than edgehighlight for an hour straight.
