There not killing Nintendo.
Really looking forward to Aero GPX! The demo is up? Gotta try it!!
GridDB was just the most recent. Nintendo will continually fight, they might even get involved legislatively. Last I checked they are literally the richest company in Japan.
The link for the 100 doesn't seem to work.
I am still trying to learn flick stick
As a relatively newbie gamer (I've got a fair amount of hours in the Witcher trilogy over the last year and a bit, and practically nothing else) who doesn't have decades of muscle memory against me, gyro aiming feels really natural. I've always had the reflex to move and tilt the whole controller to aim or direct a character (I'd lean with my whole body as a kid, the few times I tried playing with my siblings 😅).
I can definitely see myself using gyro more in general if it's neatly integrated in a game. I do think the handheld Steam Deck specifically might be a bit cumbersome for anything requiring rapid or large gyro adjustments, but it'd be great for smaller precision movement I think.
Just discovered this channel. Awesome material, thank you!
24:50 there's too many good games out there to get around to playing so I (usually) hate playing 40hr+ games. I gave gaming ADD so 4-12 hour games are my jam.
27:50 I thought stick deflection is so people without touch sensitive sticks can experience similar "touch activated" gyro as the steam deck.
Gyro controls have made a lot of games more playable to people like myself who have arthritic problems. I first started using them when the dualshock 4 support was added to steam and I've never looked back. Great interview and well done Jibb for the work he's done.
When Is the sword show???
I don't understand the hype behind Elden Ring 🤷♂️
Jib mentioned autoaim and I have to say that I really hated the way Horizon Zero Dawn went about it.
Valve is going for world domination. They have the market place, the community and now the Deck.
Thanks so much for having me! I really enjoyed our chat and love what you're doing with the podcast <3
To be a run away hit in Japan though the Steam Deck needs to be more than just to be a handheld though, it also needs to be completely portable meaning small since Japanese audience loves small and cute things, it needs to be physical meaning offer physical games, it needs to be simple meaning games had to work the moment it finish install, and it needs to be affordable meaning it shouldn't cost as much as a high end console. You need those five ingredients to be successful in Japan for a handheld, remember Game Boy beats Game Gear in Japan cause of those, powers and install base don't matter, you just had to be cute, affordable, and simple for the Japanese audience to accept, looking at Steam Deck now it may be a somewhat good launch over there but I doubt it'll be a run away hit, maybe to the more hardcore audience there but to the masses it may be overlook. It really needs the smaller form factor and maybe another slimmer design. Remember Japan loves carrying their handheld in their pocket, if it required them to get a carrying case then it's not considered portable to them.
Super-annoyed that Steam Deck hasn't even been announced for Australia yet.
Worse: Valve actively tries to prevent people from delivering to Australia, and using the Steam Deck with an Australian account.
It's hard to comprehend, given how much harder it is for Valve to ship to Japan and South Korea.
Grrrrrrrrrrrrrr.
So I was listening to this and really not getting what Flick Stick was about. I went to Jibb's YT channel and watching the Fortnite video and it dawned on me, I've seen Flick Stick's flick and rotate camera control implemented when using the follow camera in racing games for as long as analog sticks have existed. I can recall doing this as far back as Project Gotham Racing on the original Xbox. I've not actually tried Flick Stick, but that's what comes to mind immediately to me for the stick part. I'm sure it differs, but it certainly looks familiar in how snappy the camera is. Either way, this sounds amazing as a player of Splatoon since the Wii U original and lover aiming that isn't completely dependent on analog sticks in general (going back at least as far as the Wii).
31:00 AYYYEEEEEEEEe
Pc gaming is almost non-existent here in Japan because historically people jumped from consoles straight to mobile gaming, completely skipping pc (in japan "pc games" means erotic visual novels, since this is how pc was mostly used when gaming). Most people won't even notice that steam deck exists, aside from like twelve enthusiasts. (You can't even openly buy a ps5 yet in japan, unless you win a "privilege" (!) to purchase one in a lottery). Nintendo wouldn't have to even bother about deck, since deck is so incredibly niche. But I rarely see anyone play a ds or switch on the train lately. Everyone's now glued to their smartphones playing matching puzzles and golf simulators, and I doubt it will ever change. The trains tend to get so crowded that it's hard to hold a handheld console with both hands while you're squished holding the railing with one hand for dear life. So tapping smartphone games with the other hand became the ideal option. I was already uncomfortable playing Metroid Dread on my switch commuting the train because it's so big (and switching to wired headphones is a pain, but I hate wireless delay), can't even imagine playing steam deck on a train. Already purchased one, they start shipping Dec 17, so we'll see how it goes.
Valve about to bury nintendo to the ground
People have claimed that Nintendo doesn't care at all about the Deck and doesn't see it as a threat, but I think their latest anti-emulation stunt with SteamgridDB argues otherwise. They're not stupid; while they know that Valve will never surpass them, they are certainly encroaching on their turf, in a way that hasn't occurred since the Sony PSP. Yes, the Vita sold about as well in its first year as the Steam Deck, but people did not have the excitement for it like they do with the Deck, which seems to be growing steadily. So in the portable sector, Nintendo's been without any real competition for about 17 years. They are most definitely taking notice.
The tilt puzzles would be a bit more tolerable if you can connect the external device that has gyro and use that instead of tilting the system itself that way you can still see the screen and what you want to do with it
They won't react, they will release the Switch 2, it will be weak mediocre hardware or they will change the concept and it will fail, SWiitchU. Nintendo don't realise how much the market has changed with mobile phones/games and handheld PCs… In 2016 the landscape was different, In 2023 if they release weak hardware again only die hard Nintendo fanboys will buy it, the rest who care about multiplatform games will move on.
Skyrim is a game I'll never finish, I've played on ps3 and restarted Switch.
150 512GB steam decks is around 102k EUR
@NerdNest Super Pilot is like a FZero and Aero GPX, super fast speeds and racing is similar too. Plus you can make custom tracks too. Cheap that out too.
I also own Skyrim Special Edition and haven't yet played on my deck
Ummm never played Skyrim?! Man I would pay so much money to experience Skyrim for the very first time.
You are absolutely right that proton only runs as the game runs, not when installing it. However, if the game has a linux and a windows version, the linux version is installed by default, but forcing any proton version forces it to install the windows version instead. So, I suspect it's either that, or just a coincidence that it randomly started working again right as you changed that setting.
I hate Gyro controls, for me motion controls only work when in VR when the screen is moving with you. I tried Splatoon gyro and the problem is you end up moving around so much and it’s distracting. For any third party game I’ll just play with a mouse, it’s still the superior way to aim for competitive shooters.
The Baseus power bank is basically mandatory for anyone who actually used their portable console on the go.
I wish I would have sprung for the $100 version. It's designed better and could charge my gaming laptop at 100 watts in a lunch. But the 30,000mah one is great. Just a little awkward of a shape.
it would be awkward if your sponsor was jsaux lmao
I love my Steam Deck! Best handheld I've ever owned since the original Game Boy. I'm going to run a few ideas for a successor to the Deck. Excuse the long post!
(in no particular order):
More physical customization options: swappable thumbsticks and D-pad.
OLED screen with at least 1080p and bezeless screen.
Hall sensor thumbsticks.
Built-in kickstand.
32GB RAM option.
1TB storage option.
Quick resume for multiple games, ala Xbox Series.
Thunderbolt port that can connect to external GPUs.
Two USB-C ports so you may use one for charging and the other for Ethernet/Thunderbolt.
[Obviously] Improved battery and battery life.
LEDs on the chassis.
VR support.
Rumble motors.
Gyro controls without the need for touching the right thumbstick.
A "Lite" version without the trackpads, rumble motors, back buttons and a smaller screen.
Color options.
Ability to use it as a controller with the screen being allocated for additional information or other display purposes when docked to a TV or monitor (this would require a hefty effort by developers).
Ability to cast your screen wirelessly.
SIM slot for wireless use anywhere.
I know this is unpopular on Xbox, but a dedicated share button that makes it easy to share screenshots and game clips to your account and all of your social networks, including YouTube.
NFC for sharing to your devices, tap to pay for purchasing games (if you're using a different card to purchase games or if Valve gets smart Steam cards) and as an authentication option.
Ability to support multiple accounts on one device.
Play time limits for kids.
A companion app for phones and tablets that allows you to tweak settings, customize your Deck, view and edit screenshots and videos and use it as a remote (could come in handy when docked; imagine using it as a VLC remote).
A power and memory bump when docked.
