State of Disneyland | Updates from every land and attraction | 02/2023

Our monthly State of Disneyland report featuring a tour around the park. We’ll check in on every land to see what’s happening at the attractions and with the crowds. We’ll also cover a few key news stories happening right now including the where the new AVATAR EXPERIENCE might go, and the surprisingly poor performance of Mickey and Minnies Runaway Railway (i.e. lightning lane sales).

  1. I wish I would have picked this particular day to go to the park. I was there on 2/6 and everything was super packed. Had a great time, but whatever day you went was night and day.

  2. In case you’re wondering I made this comment before I got to this in your video.

Just a thought — Is there room for an Avitar Experience of some kind where the old motorboat ride used to be? That’s still a good sized empty spot that you said some Disney executives and Imagineers had been looking at.

  3. It's not that people don't like Runaway Railway. It's the fact that no one wants to pay an additional $25+ to do something that should be included in entry. I last went in 2012 and genie+ and LL were not a thing. I'm going in May and I'm NOT paying for the new "fastpass."

  4. I just love watching your face as the light bulbs go on about the possibilities for the Avatar experience. 😂 I was wondering if they would maybe take out Star Tours since it’s so out of place with Galaxy’s Edge. But I like your idea of using the water area.

  5. Avatar means nothing to me. I think you’re reading more into the announcement than what’s going to happen. It’s probably just going to be in one of the empty buildings like they did with the frozen sing along and snow play experience.
I hope they don’t destroy a whole portion of a land just to recreate what Florida has. Let’s make something new and different for Disneyland if we’re going to destroy and rebuild.
I like runaway railroad, but it’s not something that makes me want to come to Disneyland just for it. Pirates is still a ride that does that for me. As long as I get to ride it my Disney day is fulfilled.
I think that when toon town opens the excitement for the railroad will go up again. Without the full land and rides around it it’s not as enjoyable as it could be. Florida is different I imagine because it’s a stand alone ride. I think a lot of people are waiting to ride it until the whole land is finished.
As far as splash is concerned I think they’ll wait until next winter. There’s so much construction going on at the Disneyland Resort, so I just don’t see it happening until a lot of the bigger construction is getting close to finished. Florida doesn’t have as much construction from what I see in videos so it makes sense to start there. It also helps to get one close to being finished so if there’s any kinks they won’t happen in the second one. It feels more logical and cost effective to me that way 🤷🏻‍♀️ anyways now I wished I would’ve gone to DL on Thursday 😂 I was waiting for all the sweethearts to be over because events usually make it more crowded. Boy did I call that wrong 🤦🏻‍♀️🤣

  6. I don’t think people NOT buying lightening lane is a bad sign – people shouldn’t have to pay more to ride a ride once in the park. I get the use of it, but I’m happy to not have to see people paying extra to ride it. It works for time of demand – I’ve gone in February year over year for that reason, it’s always been a better time of year than going during the holidays or summer.

  7. My latest crazy idea. Those buildings along the edge of ToonTown, Galaxy's Edge and such – pretty much all around the park. Most of those buildings are warehouses and equipment refurbishment sites, right? How about taking all of those buildings, and putting them underground, greatly expanding the underground city underneath Disneyland? If they did that, they can continue having the storage they need onsite, but they would have the room for an Avatar attraction, and maybe even an Encanto attraction. Now, remember, I did say this was a crazy idea. . . .

  8. Frozen made so much money and it’s massively popular and all they have at DL is a meet and greet which is constantly missing one half of the sister team

Before avatar I’d love for Anna and Elsa to get more than a meet and greet

  9. so what you're saying is it wasn't busy on this day? and you go how often? I think you didn't need to harp on the fact it wasn't busy, we got it in the first 5 minutes

  10. Hopefully they never bring a permanent pandora to Disneyland. If anything they should demo the theater and expand Galaxy’s Edge. Better yet, demo Toon Town and build 2-3 medium/large Galaxy’s Edge attractions.

  11. … and the minute the light bulb went on after joking that Avatar would replace the subs. It fits, doesn’t it? Don’t get me wrong, I love the subs, but it’s a huge tract of land and the subs are as old as the Matterhorn, plus there is the ADA compliance headache to this day. I really think the subs are endangered, I just wish it were not Avatar. Nothing against Avatar, I just think there are other properties (Frozen among them) that would work just as well in the footprint and pump some energy into both Tomorrowland and parts of Fantasyland. Also a good excuse to refurb Autopia and extend its life.

Thanks for the video! Nice to see that off season does still ebb and flow into Disneyland.

  12. You didn’t make it back to check on Pirates 😊
    Thanks for the updates.
I still want the motor boat cruise to make a triumphant return.
Tomorrow land makes the most sense for Avatar.

  13. Imagine if you will: Tomorrow Land closes down. Nemo subs plus the extra lagoon goes to Avatar. The People Mover gets refurbished and they bring back the Carousel of Progress (preferred )or America Sings to have a place for the animatronics from Splash.

  14. Sorry to say Dave, I went on it too… it’s “neat” but NOBODY is asking for a Mickey Mouse circa 1928 ride unless Disney is trying to prevent Mickey Mouse from going into the public domain. Keep up the great work!!!

  15. We got a Tatooine Sunset EVERY DAY of our January trip, David!!!! It is literally the best. My husband doesn't get enthusiastic about anything related to the parks, but I have to get that man a Tatooine Sunset every day!!! 😂😂😂

  16. I’m a Magic Key holder from Northern California and am waiting till my trip in March for the opening of Toon Town to ride Mickeys Runaway Railway. I do think there will be an uptick of a wait time once Toon Town opens again especially for out of towners.

  17. Changing the remaining little Critter Country we have left to Avatar would be a horrible idea. IMO Avatar is very overrated and something that does not feel Disney in the least. Secondly, Navi’s River Journey is not a very good ride and is widely known for that. I feel the best thing to do is just extend NO square throughout that entire space. Just keep Winnie the Pooh the same and it “just happens” to be in that land.

  18. I have to disagree David. I think you’re way off with Avatar. And, it’s possible that I’m wrong. I watched the first Avatar movie once, maybe twice. And haven’t even had interest to watch it in 12 years. I’m not even sure people were begging for an Avatar 2. Most people I’ve talked to have had the same reaction to Avatar as a whole.

Star Wars on the other hand, I’ve watched at least over 50 times and even the sequel Trilogy I’ve watched at least 5-6 times and I hated those. The Marvel movies I’ve watched countless times as well. Original Disney content are what Disney fans have been watching. I’ve been to Pandora in WDW and after an hour of admiring the land, It wasn’t a place that I needed to go back to. And the merch… well I had zero interest because I didn’t have the same connection to it as I did with other IPs. Disneyland would be better suited to create a Frozen land especially next to the Matterhorn and Fantasyland. That would fit in perfectly. Avatar isn’t even truly a franchise. It literally has two movies.

I’m sure I’ll get destroyed in the comments but like I said… I could be wrong.
