Heres some more information on starting onions from seed!
Ive started my onions from seed for 5 years and Ive found a few things I like to do to make planting go a bit smoother over the years!
I personally like to start my onion seeds 10-12 weeks before my plant out date. WHICH IS NOW!! Im currently sitting 10 weeks out from 6 weeks before my last average frost. 6 weeks has worked really well for me in the past but Ive also planted closer to 4 weeks before my last average frost. Last year we had a fluke cold snap at the end of march but the onions did just fine with a bit of cover. Ill be continuing to watch the weather like normal and if we are staying cold I might hold off a week or two. You know how weird spring can be lol The latest Ive started my onion seeds was around the 6/7 of January so if your in a similar area as me, you got a little bit of time. You can also buy starts that are farther along that will ship out in spring if you miss your window!
DAY LENGTH MATTERS!!!! Im in Kansas where intermediate varieties are recommended. You sunlight length in the summer is what triggers the bulbing of the onion. If your north of me look at long day and if your more south look at some short day varieties. If your unsure do a quick google search and it should tell you what works best for your area.
Soil blocking individual plants vs bulk sowing many in a nursery pot? Ive done both. Whenever Ive soiled blocked I’ve had better looking starts and doing them individually like I do allows me for easier planting out! Onions have strong roots and can easily be pulled apart, but I think it still effects the roots and makes the onions have to adjust more once planting in my opinion.
I will trim up the onion greens once they get to be about 5-6 inches in length and ill continue to trim until about a week before planting. This allows the base to get stronger without the onion flopping over.
Let me know if you have any questions and ill do my best to answer them!

Hey. BRE im sharing your channel here on my tic tok for 2500 viewers. I have a few asking about stuff your more successful at than I am. 😅 are u ok with this?
I’m getting ready to order my seeds for 2025 😊 excited to follow your garden as well!
Can’t wait for these lil babes to see the outdoors! Because that will mean spring is just about here! ❤
I'm so jealous! Our last frost date is mid June!!! I'm zone 6, but it's high desert, so we can actually have overnight frosts any day of the year – even July & August! I'm going to be bold & plant a flat of onions anyway. 🤞
What is already under your lights??
Cool setup. Thanks for sharing.
Bre loving the Onions❤
What part of Kansas are you in? I started a small garden in southwest Missouri this last year and I’m expanding it this spring. I’m wondering how applicable your advice is to me in 7a
You pronounce oNion strangely. You say uGnion. Just an observation. Yay for ognions
