Starfleet Tactical #152: Modularity Flexibility, and Producibility, pt 1 (w/ Chris Carlson)
Come join us as we discuss all things Space Combat!
This week, Chris Weuve and Chris Carlson start what is expected to be a three-part discussion of some NAVSEA studies from the late 1980s and early 1990s. We’ll talk about how all this relates to science fiction in general, Star Trek in particular, and previous discussion about modular ship design and the Littoral Combat Ship.

Oh! I finally came up with some possibly-useful input on the scheduling. It's like how here I am in EST and for a while now 'Axanar After Dark' is anything but after dark most of the year, and especially with migraines I've been getting I usually need to make the use of gentler daylight for what I do until actual dark means 'Down Tools.' In the darker part of the year, probably a lot of people are in sooner, though. Maybe in similar ways it would be better to go by season rather than clocks? THey change em anyway.
Love it!
Where in Ohio are you?
I am in Northeast Ohio, Hubbard to be exact.
Love it!
I think the Miranda lasted as long as it did because of the 2 module mounting hardpoint on the sides. I think the mounting points are close enough to the Nacelles that they gain all the power benefits of a warp core upgrade and the modules are swapped out with new as the tech is improved.
Also, the Miranda has 2 huge shuttle bays/cargo bays relative to its size. large bays are great for upgrades, swap out old fighters/probes/etc. for new.
I don't comment much but I look forward to this show every week! Especially when both Chris' are on!!
Connie is a WW1 design, Miranda is an Interwar, and Excelsior is a WW2 design. Miranda hangs on being a more utility designed base frame. Another channel did some math and the Miranda has 20% more internal volume than a Constitution. I posit to you, the older styles are kept in low rate production and upgraded because the Federation is 300+ member worlds (iirc?). The technology levels and capabilities of members and their moral stance to violence would vary greatly.
