Stardew Valley is a simulation role-playing video game developed by Eric “ConcernedApe” Barone. Players take the role of a character who takes over their deceased grandfather’s dilapidated farm in a place known as Stardew Valley. The game was released for Windows in February 2016 before being ported to several other computer, console, and mobile platforms.

Stardew Valley is open-ended, allowing players to take on activities such as growing crops, raising livestock, fishing, cooking, mining and foraging, and socializing with the townspeople, including the ability to marry and have children. It also allows up to four players to play online together.

Barone developed Stardew Valley by himself over four years. He was heavily inspired by the Harvest Moon series, with additions to address some of the shortcomings of those games. He used it as an exercise to improve his own programming and game design skills. British studio Chucklefish approached Barone midway through development with the offer to publish the game, allowing him to focus more on completing it.

Stardew Valley was praised by critics, who highlighted the game’s music, characters, and relaxing qualities, with it later being cited as one of the greatest video games of all time. Yasuhiro Wada, the creator of Harvest Moon, also praised the game for retaining the freedom that later entries of his series had lost. The game was also a commercial success, selling over 20 million copies by 2022.

  2. For the reasons you liked this game, I recommend the "My time at…" series. My Time At Portia is finished, and I have as many hours in it as Stardew, but My Time At Sandrock is in early access right now, and wooo boy is it good! Theres a few QOL updates, but the original is still fun, too. My favorite part about Portia is how the town changes as you help out, it's really satisfying to see all your work.

  3. I started this late last year. I was not into gaming, but my friends at work kept talking about it, so I thought I'd give a computer game a chance. My first day in-game I was cussing at it (I was stuck between a rock, log, and weed; I had no idea how to get out of it until I realized I had some tools I could use). Needless to say, I stopped cussing. Then I started caring. Then I became obsessed. I have over 700 hours in this game with multiple saves. I even 100% completed one of my play-throughs. I also have a co-op game going with my friends — with spreadsheets!. Because of Stardew Valley, I now buy and play computer games regularly. It's added a new dimension to my leisure time. I will always love this game.

  4. Stardew Valley was the game I picked up during Quarantine, and For 8 months I never put it down lol. Whenever I finished my School work I would wind down with this game until I was about to collapse. Now, it's one of my top ten favorite video games of all time.

  6. when i started playing stardew i was aware it was a big game full of things to do but omg is it full of things to do, i wasnt expecting it to be this addictive. i have about 140h on my main farm (year 8) and like 14 on a farm i stared a few days ago, and i still havent done everything or even gotten close to 100% completion. it was also really fun figuring out how to play the game, for the first 4 years on my farm i did almost no progress and the cc was completed on year 6 but i still had fun and there was never a time when i got bored of the game. tho i did stop playing for a couple of weeks bc i was just overwhelmed with stuff to do but im back at it again! rn im trying to get the gold clock and decorate my farm:)

  8. There are only maybe two or three things I don’t like about this game (toddler children, can’t move trees, the fact that I get a money penalty when I pass out on my own farm), but the good things far outweigh the bad. I love the art style, the NPCs, all the different skills, the achievements and collecting things, the music, the whole vibe. At this point, I’ve played on every farm type at least once and married/been roommates with every available NPC, and I got perfection on two different farms, and I STILL go back and play it. I love doing little challenges too, like completing the community center in one year, or purchasing 100 pigs on a farm, or building fish ponds for every fish in the game (needed 61 ponds!) There’s always something fun to try.

  9. I just pick up Stardew Valley this year, and I've put all my other games to the side for about a month and a half now. I went from FPS to this sweet little "farming" sim. This game is worth more than the money I spent on it. Got it for the switch if that matters.

  10. I've never played a game before as much as I've played stardew valley. I've bought it on every console I've ever owned that its come out on, my boyfriends consoles as well. I've put well over a thousand or more hours into. The only game that comes close to that is splatoon 2! I've played since it came out to 2016 to this day. It is one of the best games ever made and I always tell people even if you don't like "farming" games you have to give this one a go!

  12. This game got me through so many difficult times in my life. Like you said, this game becomes an escape for anyone who plays it.
I think, you can probably tell now why the community can get so defensive over this game sometimes (and over Eric), because for a lot of us, this game just feels like home.
It feels like that friend you needed but were never able to reach when you felt alone (as weird as this may sound).

I'm very happy you found the same kind of comfort in this game. Welcome to the community! =)
