StarCraft 2 Nova Covert Ops Retrospective: A Chance At Redemption

Howdy folks! I’m so excited to talk about the story of Nova Covert Ops. Thank you so much to the people who recommended me this game, it truly changed my melancholy feelings after the epilogue of LoTv.

Nova Covert Ops makes me believe in the starcraft universe again, there are so many stories that they can tell, and so many that I believe we as a fan base, want to hear.

Covert Ops does such a great job at combining gameplay, visuals and narrative together that I now hold out hope that we can get another iteration of this great universe.

I’d love to know your thoughts on this game, and the franchise ending itself, what would you like to see next?

Sincerely,

Dog Dad

  1. It's worth mentioning that Reigel is a former member of the mobius foundation. Weirdly, to my knowledge this is only shown in an easter egg on the Co-op mission Part and Parcel, as you can find a pair of mobius scientists who have a chance to mention how odd it was that Reigel disappeared.

  2. 15:33 If you've never read Starcraft Ghost: Nova I'll summarize. Nova was one of the Old Families who are basically the direct descendants of the first people to colonize the Koprulu Sector. She was basically part of this super rich family and when she was little her parents were killed and she got picked up by one of the Confederacy's wranglers for the ghost program. She got a really raw deal and I always feel bad thinking about how she had her whole family taken away, goes from serving the Cofederacy to the Dominion and having her mind wiped every so often to forget more of who she is.

  3. Having not played this myself yet, I have a lot less to say on this. But man, what a turnaround from the last two campaigns. Blizzard's writing seems to have been at it's best when Terrans were the main focus, even if it wasn't Raynor's Raiders. This might actually just demonstrate the actual difficulty writing for those factions, particularly zerg.

Honestly, I would love some more games in the SC universe, and the Hearthstone mini set that is a Starcraft crossover has only made me want to see more of that.
Sure, Kerrigan and Jimmy are now done with their stories, but we now have a Dominion that has it's internal political struggles (which is fair, given it was basically glued together from the pieces of an already fractured Confederacy by… well Arcturus Mengsk), the zerg are now coming to terms with a whole lot of new ideas being injected into the swarm by a leader that is no longer present, and the protoss… well they have a lot going on with all the things that broke in Legacy of the Void. There's room for not just an RTS game, nor a good FPS, but also things like an RPG. This is an IP that, while it had a couple of messy bits, actually opened itself up to some new interesting points of storytelling by closing off the main arc they had going. Smaller scale stories that could be independent from one another. Hopefully BlizzardActivisionMicrosoft will actually do something other than just sit on it.

  4. Honestly, after hearing you jab at blizzard for shelving SC: Ghosts for the past 3 retrospectives I thought this video was going to be a lot more negative…
With the way Nova's campaign ended it did leave room for more StarCraft lore, especially for Ghosts to be unshelved!
What would you do if A/Blizzard decided to make a 4 man coop like DRG but with rogue operators?

  5. I've always loved when a game franchises takes the risk and make a spin off from their main gameplay style and uses the different perspective to explore their universe from a different angle. Doesn't always work out but it's always an admirable attempt. With Microsoft's resources they could take the risk of releasing a game like Starcraft: Ghost or an RPG set in the universe (Which I'd prefer much more than an MMO in all honesty…). Whether they actually do so or not is something we'll have to wait and see.

  6. I really liked this game, but I felt like the terrazine cutscene at the end of Flashpoint was kind of stupid. I guess it establishes how Nova ended up in the opening cutscene, but it’s like if in a James Bond movie he tries to escape, gets the shit beaten out of him by two unnamed one-off characters, and then escapes for real. I just feel like it’s the only fight scene we got in the game and sort of messed with the lore of ghosts being badass and doesn’t go anywhere. I think they could’ve revealed Davis in a much better way. Regardless, another great video.

  7. Gonna second the other comments requesting you go over the Co-op mode. The playable commanders all feel super flavorful and give you tools to make you feed ludicrously overpowered while still kinda being balanced. The missions are mostly nods to previous Starcraft campaign missions, and you might get a good laugh out of the 'guest' NPCs that give you mission objectives.

Fun tip: If a mission feels like it's thematically tied to a playable commander, you might get a bonus line of dialogue at the start and/or completion.

  8. And regarding this part… Well… The only two and half things, that i just do not like are:
-to shor story + ending is not just open, but crying about proper sequel
    – final boss… C'mon… This ship is just as ugly, as upscailed viking during kerrigans camping… Even worster. It's just lools like mecha-starship aberation…

  9. Would love them to add more commanders and missions in the Coop Commanders. Nova co op was great. There are endless possibilities and money making on doing extra side missions for the other characters. Hell I would love them to bring Tychus back.
