Star Trek: Picard Season 3, Episode 1 – re:View

We’re back! Two elderly men talk about Star Trek Picard Season 3, episode 1! Now, before you expect clown wigs and blood and screeching – please do note: This is just a review of the very first episode and so far they did a pretty good job! Rich and Mike try to be as fair as possible when they talk about stuff and even Star Trek Picard is included.

  1. the villain looks like a female version of the child catcher from chitty chitty bang bang .and it seems real odd to me that a rifle would loudly tell everyone close by that your out of ammo . its a deadly design flaw

  2. I had some issues with this first episode, but nothing crippling: The Titan doesn't look right, Warp still looks like SW-Hyperspace, Shaw is an absolute Bastard for no reason whatsoever, the First Contact-Theme during the End Credits (as much as I love the Music) is just a reuse of the original recording and doesn't fit storywise and everything is just so goddamn dark. Compared to the issues I had with Seasons 1 and 2 by the time they concluded, these are peanuts. I'm fine with the Story (so far) I love the all the interactions between Riker and Picard, I like Commander Seven of Nine, I like the Music (by new Composer Stephen Barton, thankfully replacing Jeff Russo) and the story flows at a good pace without much unneccessary sidetracking. I haven't felt that good about a live-action Trek-Episode since Enterprise, outside Fanfilms. So, I am happy (for now) but also kind of sad, because they could have made this Series like this from the outset instead of wasting everyones' time. Seasons One and Two now feel completely irrelevant, Raffi and Laris and their backstories aside, I doubt anything substantial from these past 20 Episodes will play any part in Season Three, neither the Monsters from the Robot Dimension nor Juratis' new Borg Collective (given that Allison Pill is not a part of the cast).
In short: It was entirely possible to make this show the true Sequel to the 24th-Century-Show I always wanted but they decided against it because… well, sheer fucking hubris, I guess…

But as satisfied as I am right now, I'll keep up my Guard for now. I didn't forget that Season Two also started with a relatively Trek-esque Episode. It could be that this first Episode (or the first couple of Episodes) are designed to placate the audience they lost, draw in chagrined members of the core-audience again, only to hit them over the head with some major Bullshit near the End. I'd be more than happy to be proven wrong, that my caution is unwarranted, but I've been burned before.

  3. I have to disagree with you guys on the point that Picard didn't have an emotional connection with the Enterprise on TNG. Maybe he didn't show it often, but he definitely did. There's one instance in particular, I think it's the barion sweep episode, where he's on the bridge alone and has a little moment to himself admiring his ship.

  4. 46:20 I too was floating on a cloud of giddy hope until i saw the "bad guy ship"; immediately deflated back to terra firma by an accompanying Riker wah wah trombone as i was rudely reminded this is a JJ Kurtzman kerfuffle – and yet… i dare hope.

  5. I don't watch Star Trek. I really don't have any interest of picking up Star Trek. But I absolutely love listening to RLM talk about Star Trek. It was a sad day for me, when they said that they would never do it again. I'm so glad that they are back!

  6. I'm getting vibes from Shaw that he probably has a connection to Wolf 359, his distain for the Borg both Picard and Seven. Not saying his character isn't like a Jellico but I kinda got Sisko/Picard thoughts watching that scene and it felt like if Sisko REALLY gave it to Picard. I'm looking forward to those layers in Shaw… I hope.

  7. I’m calling it now. The Rachel Garret reference means Tasha Yar is back. She wasn’t executed by the Romulans. She’s pissed she was left behind and is out for revenge.

  8. NO SPECULATION ON THE MYSTERIOUS RAFI CONTACT? YOU KIDDING? ITS FRIGGEN WORF! HE SAYS "YOU ARE A WARRIOR." WHO ELSE TALKS LIKE THAT? No, I'm not that mad but I'm kinda surprized that didn't stick out to these guys.

  9. If by some miracle I managed to turn on episode 1 of season 3 of Star Trek: Picard I would have turned it off immediately upon hearing "I Don't Want to Set the World on Fire."
