St Alphonsus for the 21st Century: A Handbook for Holiness

Join Stephen Kokx and me as we discuss his latest book “St Alphonsus for the 21st Century: A Handbook for Holiness”. This book is a Semi-autobiographical account of a Millennial Catholic who fell away from the Church in
college but thanks to discovering St Alphonsus is now a weekly Latin Mass attendee. It is an extremely well done book and I highly suggest you read it:

FAQ:
Why ‘the religious hippie?’
It was a nickname my friends gave me when I was in highschool because I dressed like a hippie and was a ‘wild child’, when I came back into my faith they thought ‘the religious hippie’ was now a more appropriate nickname and it stuck!

  1. The reference to meditation reminded me of my Vipassana Meditation retreat. My time there was only 10 days of no talking and no looking at others, just eat, sleep and meditate. I believe the monks do it for 20-30 days. In the bible Jesus goes into the desert for 40 days/nights. And as there have been shown a link between Christianity, Indian and Zoroastrianism. I'm thinking that perhaps the meditation I learned there may be something that has been lost in Christianity.

  2. I received my baptism last week, along with confirmation and first eucharist. I felt such a cleansing and love wash over me. It was obviously divine and supernatural. The intimacy I felt with Jesus was intense and it stayed with me all day. I love being Catholic! I could go on and on. Thank You Jesus ❤️ & Mami Mary 🩵 Holy Ghost and Father God. Now when I go to church I feel like family, washed in His blood. Amazing 🥰

  3. I was turned off from St Alphonsus entirely when I read some pamphlet years ago that struck me as so scrupulously that it almost scandalized me out of taking the faith as anything but superstition. Embarrassingly I even threw out the pamplet rather than have my girlfriend find it and think I was in a cult where you abandon your own thoughts to obey religious leaders.

Now that said more about me being lax and uninformed than about the saint, and now in time I can appreciate his work on prayer and humility.
