I've had to fire someone who had just lost her mother. I had no choice but to coldly look at her and disregard everything that she was going through because she failed to meet metrics at an Amazon warehouse. It sucked, but I've had to do it so much that I was becoming numb to it. Glad I'm a web developer now.
Are participants in real debt and they accually win a lot of money?
I’ve fired people. Most of the time it was for things like theft, but I did once fire a guy because he wasn’t very good at his job. It was really stressful, but the thing that allowed me not to feel like a piece of shit, was that I was thinking of his team when I did that. His team, where everyone had to work harder because he was a slacker. Coworkers were complaining about him all the time. Later we hired another guy for his position and the whole team is doing much better now. A bad employee is not only a problem for the profits, but is actively harming their team, because the remaining team needs to pull the weight they’re not pulling.
In never stops being stressful though.
You can tell this guy is a liberal socialist
I can’t believe this reality show got as popular as it is. Did the audience watch the first season!?
These people applied to be on the show, and they knew what the show was based on
Im not a researcher but how about wheb the NTs got pissed the chronically ill didn't want to risk stuff with covid reopenings. Funny how its fine once you are safe. Able bodied people are THE BEST.
Man, the only conclusion you can reach about the selective memory of a collective is that life goes on and people prioritize what to do with their time and mind. It’s not something intrinsically evil or good, it’s a fact that life is limited and there’s no use on dwelling unnecessarily in the past. That’s universal.
I have a friend that was on the show for the first round. The round went on for over 8 hours, because Netflix didn’t want to let too many contestants through. This was filmed in an aircraft hanger with no heating in the dead of a cold winter, at least three people had to be carried off set on stretchers, some were removed after suffering seizures as nobody was allowed to come away for medications… or indeed bathroom breaks- so people were literally pissing themselves while freezing. It was a minor fiasco in British newspapers last year at the time of the filming, as many contestants decided to break their non disclosure agreements and talk to newspapers.
The reality of the show is even more of a cruel irony than the humanity crushing nature of making a game show about a show about capitalism 😂
Dumb take. It's just a game show taking advantage of a popular name. Why does this warrant a 25 minute analysis on the essence of a 'bourgeois society'?
Does the fact that Ashley (05) verbally disagreed to the social plan (one step for each), change your mind/ or changes something for you about "the group" decided that it wants to do this task more social?
We should have totally watched this together… Without pausing.
I really thought it was written (aka not being real) as a satire of the modern reality and I kept waiting for the criticism to kick in but… It's incredible that someone like 432 exist irl
Why you no link videos you mention? You slippin, Mikey-boy, you slippin. (much love)
Holy shit. This video just covered the ideas that have been bouncing around in my head. Our current capitalist society strips our humanity. We need to get resources to survive but we should not be so lost in our occupations that we forget to be human and to love each other on at least a basic level.
I'm sure it's been pointed out by someone already, but fear factor was pretty horrifyingly degrading to people, especially women, and it was again over (relatively for rich people) insanely small sums of money.
Also, I semi-support degrading people who are inanely money hungry (most people in our society now value money for it's own sake, nobody who understands what money is fell for crypto), but I think people who have money usually aren't equipped to do that job and just make asses out of themselves. If we actually did reward great people with money (instead of rewarding our literal worst) things would be different, but that wouldn't be fun for the already rich.
Also, when is that video making fun of gambling addicts coming out? I hear drake is an addict too. It's the main vice I can look down on, because it's even dumber than anything I'm into (and I am into some incredibly stupid shit).
If anyone wants ethical reality TV, give Forged in Fire a try.
It's just a bunch of blacksmiths geeking out over who made the better made weapon/work of art.
That is the entire point of Squid Game?
The Squid Game challenge is a compulsion to westernize a foreign product.
Debt actually pre-dates almost all forms of modern economies, even predating barter societies. It is more fundamental than capital, coinage, or barter. The book Debt: The First 5000 Years by David Graeber is a fascinating read, and definitely a must-read if you are still under the misconception that debt is a modern invention.
Putting that one photo of Trey as your thumbnail after he said he didn’t like it is degrading..
The first ad that YT played on this video was a “proven, time tested method to create millionaires” from a “man who came from nothing, but built everything”.
Yowza…
You can't build a Chuck-E-Cheese without getting a 5 Nights at Freddy's. Evidently it works in reverse too, if you build Five nights at Freddy's they'll make a Chuck-E-Cheese version. Where is my saw game show?!
I genuinely love all of your content, but I don't know why I can't focus when background noise/music is included. I'm either okay enough to muster the energy to work through it, or I have to skip it all together 😢 either way, I find your content valuable and insightful 🖤
I’ve refused to watch it..the idea just disgusts because of how much I loved the original show itself.
society is not built on competition nature is built on competiton
Fireing people does feel bad.
As a chef, i always think my job is to give my crew the tools they need to succeed.
When I have to fire someone it feels more like I failed them as a leader.
It’s not like Squid Games was based on some dystopian world not grounded in reality. It wasn’t even set in the future, like Squid Games could actually happen and it well, it did. Netflix did it. Sure they didn’t k*ll anyone but it’s not like that was the only message and take away from the OG show.
I see this show (Squid Game the Challenge) as making Squid Game in general be silly and unserious. Same goes for Mr Beasts Squid Game. This exposure normalizes what the og show criticized by literally doing it!
Not going to finish the video, (made it to 19:47) because i think i have an answer, social pressure to do good.
Not to carrot and stick the arguments together, but while there was a sort of "union" to make it through the game, there was no "union" in there success.
If i am selfless, where is my guarrentee that I will be taken care of. People will benefit from those with uteristic behaviors.
But what happens if there is a cost not to help the group? What if you now become targeted by everyone else if you don't help, then you will meet the minimum requirement, and take your risk of going through the glass.
What if, when they get close to the end, they all band together to share profits, no matter who wins. Sure, if may not be enforcable by law, but isn't this where pink swears and blood mingling came from. There is no external force that you or they will keep their word, but from a selfish point of view, it has a higher chance of succeeding than going alone.
Now imaging this was to maintain a legacy after you die, to care for you childern and your family, and as you meet others like you, to take on the obligation to care for their families. It is how communities are formed (and how in group and out groups get created, because we all opt-in as individuals by our actions or lack of action).
I would be curious, if the idea was floated into the press or the game itself, how many winner would see out and share their winnings with those that they had friendships and bonds during the show, and how many selfish people they would give nothing to.
Not watching the series, but I would watch a game show, that while the winner gets the bulk of the prize, what would happen if the winner was required to identify who would 20 sub prizes. (Eg if 400 mill was up for grabs and 100 had to be distributed to as many other contestents available, how would that change the social dynamic. )
Thank you
Honestly if that squid game was real and with all the bullets they got. I would think getting shot would be the damn prize…
History is written by a collection of winners of war and financial gain. Lots of indigenous cultures and 3rd world nations disagree with the history that is forced on them by our colonial roots. That's our selective, collective bias.
So all game shows and reality competition show are gross then. I think the point of this show is to entertain and have one person win almost 5 million. Everyone get easily offended smh
Also, the person who won the price hasn´t been paid yet, 10 months after recording ^^
17:05 "The way in which as groups and societies we sometimes sort of selectively forget really odious things that happened when those things benefit us…"
So you are talking about a sizable portion of Americans' relation slavery?!
I get that it misses the point of the og show but as a reality competition show it was really great. Better than recent seasons of Big Brother.
Humanity has never been afraid to humiliate itself.
