Mmm hunh. Brer Rabbit wasn't portrayed as an African, he was portrayed as an African American Slave. The NAACP is a rubber stamp group for the white power establishment. Thanks.
I made my final trip to Disneyland last year. Taking Splash Mountain out of Disneyland completely destroyed a huge part of my childhood memories and is something I can’t forgive Disney for. I’ll just go to Knotts and Universal from here on
Looks like Splash Mountain has gone the way of the 20,000 Leagues ride: only available in Japan in a park not owned by Disney. I was able to ride the latter last month at DisneySea and passed by the former at Tokyo Disneyland. I know people there love Br'er Rabbit and company.
Why isn’t Driving Miss Daisy being ostracized for the same reason? Morgan Freeman is arguably one the best actors in the business not just black actors.
I saw Song of the South when it was re-released in the 80s. The theater was so packed my mom & I ended up having to sit in the front row on the far side of the row. Yes, it was VERY POPULAR when it was re-released.
It's kind of sad that this is going away. People don't read Joel Chandler Harris anymore. For sure, it's not taught in school. JCH wrote the Uncle Remus stories to "preserve in permanent shape those curious mementoes of a period that will no doubt be sadly misrepresented by historians of the future." How prophetic then that the most visible vestiges of his work have finally been stripped away
Song of the South was re-released in 1980 and 1986 (before Spash mountain opened the next year).. it came in ranked 53 in revenue that year.. ahead of the big budget Howard the Duck tho it was released nov 30 and Duck on Aug 1. It also beat the re-release of Lady and the Tramp (Dec 19) and Sleeping Beauty (Mar 7).
Yeah I know they had good intentions with SM, especially if the majority thought it was a great idea, it's literally today's time where we find everything "offensive", it's pretty sad. Do I think TBA is gonna be better than SM? Probably not. I dont think it's gonna have the talk Disney is hoping for.
All democrats are r*cist by default. The party or the triple k and so on. The party that killed Malcom x and Luther king.
The party that erased successful black icons like Aunt Jemima and Uncle Ben and now Song of the South. It's always the democrats, every single time.
The irony of replacing Splash with Tiana is that Brer Fox, Brer Bear and Brer Rabbit are genuine examples of African American folklore, while Tiana is not.
Breaks my heart because I figured this out when all THIS PC garbage started. Being an artist and disney collector I saw how disney was very careful and professional on how they presented this ride. It will be definitely missed. Everything Disney is doing now makes me sad and I don't feel I can support them in any way. Walt wouldn't have gone in this direction. He always said in was in the entertainment business only.
So glad to hear Tony say this.
WDW Pro, I don't know about a "Song of the South" reissue in the eighties but in February 1970 Disney announced that the filmwas to be permantly withdrawn. But after overwhelming public reation Disney had a change of heart and re-released the film in January 1972 to become one of the most succesful reissues in the company's history. You must remember nearly everything Disney touches at the moment they kill the magic.Cheers, Chris Perry.
I never been on splash mountain (that I can remember) because I don’t care for water rides. But for Bob to speak for a whole race of people who never once complained about this ride is just wrong
I never really saw the movie or even knew about the movie. Back in the 80s when I was a kid I had tones of story books especially from Disney and they either where about brier rabbit and tar baby or had that story in a large collection of stories.
Sad that Disney now finds more joy in destroying memories then creating them 😏
SPLASHMOUNTAIN – Sad to see it go!!
They should ive up the rights to sots if they dont want to use it
This is black history these are african stories. They should be told..
The problem is they want to erast how people used to talk and claim they spoke just like today……
This is in fact very sad.
Thank you for having this great content I am enjoying it. I had no idea of what Tiana’s attraction will bring.
It's very important that these type of behind the scenes stories can be told!
Excellent insightful informative. Thank you. Im so proud of Mr Baxter for standing up for what he created and for giving the TRUE background for the ride. The imagineers like him are long gone and its so sad. He and Joe Rhode truly cared about and researched their project and brought unparalleled family entertainment to us. Thankfully I have been able to ride splash mountain multiple times. Iger is systematically destroying everything we held dear about the magic of Disney. What a shame. 😢
burn Disney burn. 🔥
Millions of people rode that ride and most came back with huge smiles except maybe the grand parents that got a little wet. Maybe .0001% were offended so my suggestion don’t ride the fricken thing and ruin it for the 99.9999% that loved the ride. I’m so sick of corporations bowing to a bunch of piss ants. My grandkids are the losers in all this because the grandparents (me) will NEVER take them to WOKE WORLD. Universal all the way baby! My wife and I use to go every near before Christmas. We have been there on over 7 years and will never go back. Sorry Disney, WOKE ain’t my cup of tea.
RIP Walt and Roy, Iger and his goon’s ruined a great thing,
Honestly I’m also getting tired of blank promises by Disney as well… I mean do we have a hat box ghost… nope
