SPITFIRE / HURRICANE Corgi Aviation Archive

The classic Iron Maiden anthem, ‘Aces High’ that accompanies this video centres around the famous airborne conflict of 1940, fought in the skies of southern England and the English Channel known as The Battle Of Britain. The engagement began on 10th July, 1940 and ended on 31st October of the same year. It was a military campaign of the Second World War, in which the Royal Air Force and the Fleet Air Arm of the Royal Navy defended the United Kingdom against large-scale attacks by Nazi Germany’s air force, the Luftwaffe. It was the first major military campaign fought entirely by air forces. British success was largely down to the brave, yet largely inexperienced, RAF pilots that took on the might of the Luftwaffe. Their heroism and skill has ensured that the battle retains a special place in British history.

The video features the following aircraft –

Corgi 1/72 scale Supermarine Spitfire MK.Vb, BL595, 41 Squadron, RAF Merston, flown by Flight Lieutenant Bram Van Der Stock – one of only 3 men to successfully escape as part of the ‘Great Escape.’

Corgi 1/72 scale Hawker Hurricane MK.I, 85 Squadron RAF, 1940, flown by Squadron Leader Peter Townsend, a WWII flying ace with 9 victories to his name.

And briefly –

Corgi 1/72 scale Messerschmitt Bf-109E, JG-3. ‘UDET’ flown by Haupmann Hans Von Hahn.
