Spider-Man: Far From Home is generally one of the more divisive Spider-Man movies. Here’s why I think it deserves more credit!

Spider-Man: Far From Home is a 2019 American superhero film based on the Marvel Comics character Spider-Man, co-produced by Columbia Pictures and Marvel Studios, and distributed by Sony Pictures Releasing. It is the sequel to Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017) and the 23rd film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). The film was directed by Jon Watts, written by Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers, and stars Tom Holland as Peter Parker / Spider-Man, alongside Samuel L. Jackson, Zendaya, Cobie Smulders, Jon Favreau, J. B. Smoove, Jacob Batalon, Martin Starr, Tony Revolori, Marisa Tomei, and Jake Gyllenhaal. In the film, Parker is recruited by Nick Fury (Jackson) and Mysterio (Gyllenhaal) to face the Elementals while he is on a school trip to Europe.

Discussions for a sequel to Spider-Man: Homecoming began by October 2016, and the project was confirmed later that year. Holland, Watts, and the writers were all set to return by the end of 2017. In 2018, Jackson and Gyllenhaal joined the cast as Fury and Mysterio, respectively. Holland revealed the sequel’s title ahead of filming, which began that July and took place in England, the Czech Republic, Italy, and the New York metropolitan area. Production wrapped in October 2018. The marketing campaign is one of the most expensive for a film ever and attempted to avoid revealing spoilers for Avengers: Endgame prior to its April 2019 release.

Spider-Man: Far From Home premiered at the TCL Chinese Theatre on June 26, 2019, and was theatrically released in the United States on July 2, as the final film in Phase Three of the MCU. The film received positive reviews with praise for its humor, action sequences, visuals, and the performances of Holland and Gyllenhaal. It grossed over $1.1 billion worldwide, making it the first Spider-Man film to pass the billion-dollar mark, the fourth-highest-grossing film of 2019, and became Sony Pictures’ highest-grossing film and the 24th-highest-grossing film of all time. A sequel, Spider-Man: No Way Home, was released in December 2021.

  1. My problem with this movie is it pretends to know what happened in endgame but in reality it’s relying on the viewers knowledge of that movie for its emotional moments. They never say how iron man sacrificed his life through the snap, just that he’s dead

  2. I think mystiro being dead is a bigger waste than scorpion, especially after no way home. Imagine if in that film all the bad guys met up somewhere and beck shoes up and claims he brought them their and promises to make what they want come true to get them to fight spidey. Also in this I would have doc ock be bad in the final battle, maybe have electro shock short the chip out or something

  3. Fwiw I think you're doing a great job on these retrospectives! And I agree I don't understand why people keep lobbing the "Iron Spidey" complaint at these sequels. Missing the forest for the trees

  4. One of my favourite things in the movie is something most people miss…there are differences between Mysterio's flashback and the B.A.R.F scene in Civil War. The audience doesn't laugh and Tony admits the name needs to be changed in the Civil War scene. It really adds to the idea that Mysterio is an emtionally unstable maniac rather than somebody who had actually been screwed over. Admittedly, this relies on you remembering the scene in Civil War, which is unlikely unless you had recently seen the movie.

  5. 3:48 that is actually wrong. The first explicit showcase of peters spider sense is in civil war when he senses the incoming debris being thrown at him from behind

  6. about that first spidey sense scene, civil war was first. i think bucky throws a sign or something behind him and peters like “woah!” with his lenses expanding while he dodges the object. idk why people always forget this 😭😭
edit: just watched what you said. i always felt like civil war was first since it’s so quick and you obviously know he has spidey senses lol

  7. I’m sorry I want to like these movies but they aren’t Spider-Man movies . Peter isn’t this childlike he isn’t that naive or stupid . On top of that you can’t have a Spider-Man without an uncle Ben . And all of “spideys” villians are connected to tony stark. WHY ? How are they his villians but they main purpose of there villianay is because of tony NOT Peter . Stop saying these are Spider-Man movies when that’s not the case . And jus because toms Peter is a teen doesn’t make him Spider-Man . Seriously how much longer are y’all going to realize when you take the essence of what makes a character that character then you have a whole new character ? Hi top films said it best . This isn’t Spider-Man BUT someone Named Spider-Man .

  8. In my opinion, FFH is my favorite Spiderman movie. Now before anyone says, I don't think its THE Best Spiderman movie, NWH, Raimis Spiderman 1 and 2, and/or Into the Spider-verse definitely take that crown. But if we're talking subjectively, FFH is my favorite, for all the reasons you mentioned.

The characters are enduring, the message and themes are wonderful, the action is thrilling, everything about the villain Mysterio is gold, and overall I love how it's the one that does so much things differently and actually takes risk while still feeling like a Spiderman movie and a love letter to classic early Lee and Diko. It isnt flawless/perfect by any stretch of the imagination, but it's still one hell of a fun ride.

Though a few things I should mention, I didn't think Peter's crush on MJ came out of left field, as I'd argue there were some hints to an attraction in Homecoming between the two, also, J. Jonah Jameson was portrayed as more of a scumbag in early Lee and Diko (he was the one who funded Scorpion after all in the comics) and that's clearly what they are going for, so the Alex Jones approach doesn't bother me too much.

Finally, I do agree Mysterio is still alive, and I hope he returns in the new trilogy somehow. Maybe still remembering that Peter is Spiderman and going after him as the Jack O'Lantern or Hobgoblin. Also, thanks for properly explaining the scene in the airport and finally pointing out why it's not a contradiction, glad someone gave that scene and this movie the credit it deserves. Great job, as always.

  9. I don't care how much copium Marvel Twitter is huffing, this movie is excellent and you cannot tell me otherwise. I don't need to convince anyone, but a lot of MCU movies don't really get the respect they deserve, like GOTG Vol. 2 for example.

I love how they combined the Jon Hughes highschool comedy vibe of Homecoming with an Avengers level threat, the stakes are a lot higher this time around while still maintaining what made Homecoming so charming. The illusion scene and the Tower Bridge fight are some of the best action the MCU has ever had, the score is great, Michelle finally gets to be a bigger part of the narrative and she has so much chemistry with Peter, it's very cute. And Jake Gyllenhall as Mysterio completely steals the show, he's an absolute menace in this one.

No Way Home is easily the best one out of the three MCU Spidey movies imo, but between Homecoming and Far From Home, I genuinely can't decide which one I love more.

  10. I never liked Homecoming so I was originally going to avoid this movie, but for whatever reason I got an itch to go see it in theaters once it came out. It was pretty surprising to me that I came out loving it lol. I felt like it didn’t completely fix some of the issues I had with Homecoming but I could see that it was the direction they were going in. Plus also it gave us the best live action Spider-Man suit, you can’t beat that black and red combo.

  12. It’s kinda weird to rank the Spider-Man movies , there’s 9 of them but only 2-3 are actually bad , so for me far from Holme being 6/9 on my list is weird cause I really like it , but the others above it are just better
