JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure tells the story of the Joestar family, a family whose various members discover they are destined to take down supernatural foes using powers that they possess. Shit, I think I'm gay now.
"If we went to the same school Kakyoin I'd have given you tons of wedgies"
"We…did go to the same school JoJo…"
"Oh…well then rent's due nerd!"
Music refs:
Gray Fly: Musician Glenn Frey.
Jean Pierre Polnareff: Musician Michel Polnareff.
Cherie Polnareff: Named after the song Tout, Tout Pour Ma Chérie, by Michel Polnareff
Avdol's Crossfire Hurricane: Named after the line in Jumpin' Jack Flash, by the Rolling Stones.
Film:
The plot is a reference to Around The World in 80 Days.
Like mentioned before, Jotaro is inspired by Clint Eastwood.
Polnareff's backstory is based on The Princess Bride.
Fun fact, this story takes place in Winter. It's an easy detail to miss if you're not paying attention; things like the futons used being the ones used in cold weather or even the fact that the uniforms the boys are wearing are Winter uniforms are easy to miss. But we also have an official date for the Tower of Gray episode; the Stand User, Gray Fly (yes that's his actual name), has an actual date of death on November 28, 1988. The year is debated among fans even though all official sources state it takes place 1988-1989, based on Jotaro's birthdate (which is only given as he's an Aquarius born in 1970) it should be 1987-1988.
Funnily enough, while Hot Cola isn't a thing as far as I am aware, "Hot Dr Pepper" WAS.
only nicos bullshit powers could find the generic npc culprit IN A CROWD OF GENERIC NPC CULPRITS!
I find it kind of funny how it's implied that pretty much everybody is seduced by Dio, which gets even weirder once you consider that he's using Jonathan's body the whole time.
Joseph’s 1st plane crash was when a group of thugs tried to rob speedwagon on a plane.
2nd one was when Joseph fought Kars.
Also sometime search “f*&king piranhas”
Glad Nico picked up on the immediate homoerotic tension between Avdol and Polnareff.
22:19 Funny how you mention Paul here because Polnareff is actually the inspiration for a few fighting game characters. Paul Phoenix is one of them, but there's also Benimaru Nikaido from King of Fighters and Guile from Street Fighter (His design is a mix of Polnareff and Von Stroheim)
26:10 Nicooo whyy😂 lmao
One of the best jojo characters and the real main character of part 3
Did Kaito Momota just killed a bug?
There’s a rule that nothing good ever happens from being on a plane in an episode of JoJo’s bizarre adventure
So now that we are a few episodes in, I wanted to mention something that Araki likes to do. Araki wrote a book called "Manga in Theory and Practice," (which i recommend to those who are up to date Jojo fans) and in it he describes alot of his methods of writing and approaching his stories. One thing he mentions in the book is how he finds a character introduction to be WILDLY important. He loves to make the audience ask "who is this crazy dude? What is he talking about? Why are you so wild?" etc. We can see that with tons of characters up til now, even just in this part, with Jotaro being rude and surly, and Kakyoin being menacing and using a weird power.
Adding to that, weird powers that show up once and rarely used again seem to be a point of contention with some stands. Like Kakyoins "paint" powers, or Polnareff's fire repelling and Speed form. But Araki also talks in his book about how he likes to use misdirection and using the audiences limited knowledge of the scene to make the "what the hell is going on" feeling even more potent. I think as Araki gets better at defining what a stands powers are, we see less confusion in the abilities, and more so curious how characters will tackle whatever enemy they fight, which is great as you go on!
In the end, there is always an explanation or reason we see these powers, sometimes misdirection, sometimes its a more "niche" technique. Araki does have a tendency to "explain" this info inbetween chapters of the original runs in shonen jump or in the volume prints of jojo, so it can be lost into different adaptations or need further explainations as years go on. Again, alot of this was new terriory for Araki but also battle manga as a whole so Araki may have felt some things were more obvious at the time or wasnt important enough to explain. Whatever the case, No one handles zany and… well… bizarre situations quite like Araki, quirks and all.
I'm hoping nico really digs this dub, tmcquse these actors are amazing
so with the trivia bits coming out full force now, yeah might as well mention the genre trivia that I also did for the first 2 parts since Araki basically makes each part its own genre within battle anime. We had Part 1 as anime style gothic horror, we had Part 2 basically be Indiana Jones turned up to 15, & now Part 3 is basically a mashup of Around the World in 80 Days & a Monster of the Week anime. Also yeah with Stands like Tower of Gray, you can tell one reason Araki thought up the Monster of the Week part was just so he could throw our protags in any random ass situation he could think of. And I do mean ANY because later Stands get CRAZY by comparison
Wait till you find out that Dr. Pepper once upon a time used to be served HOT as if it was medicinal tea xD
Just started watching u man, just wanna say ur gunna love jojos if ur this into it already. The author also said manga isn’t good if its predictable! So be ready for anything!
“I was born in a crossfire hurricane” is a Rolling Stones lyric. One of the only musical references that made it through the dub unscathed
Also, those women in Dio’s harem are probably thralls. I mentioned this in previous parts, when you said they were making up vampirism abilities, but they have always had the classic power to look into a human’s eyes and hypnotize them into thralldom. This is one of the reasons people are entranced by him, and so fiercely loyal. And it’s probably the same reason those women let him drink their blood and “finger their neck” as you put it
Btw, it’s ironic you say the beginning of part 1 was like torture porn, since each part gets progressively exponentially more brutal, as evidenced by polnareffs story about the murderer sexually assaulting and slaughtering his teenage sister. Part 1 and 2 are far and away the least brutal parts of the story. Buckle up buckaroo, it gets rough from here on out. Especially in parts 4 and 5
Thank you Nico for the hilarious adlibbing. That and the editing made this vid hilarious!
