  1. I have lived in Kentucky and in the same house for almost 69 years. I have traveled. However, I always came back to Kentucky. Before trump, I was happy here. Now, I do not recognize my family and friends anymore. I am afraid of what is still to come. Everyone I know is happily oblivious of the rug that is about to be pulled from beneath them. They honestly believe trump will protect them.

  2. Thanks, Reverend Ed. You remind me of my minister growing up a progressive methodist church when Reagan came to power. I'm following you to regain faith in myself! I was 13 in 1980 and simply couldn't understand American Christianity??! I am in touch with God and Christ much as I'm able, but finding community with Jesus loving people is tough these days. I will struggle to forgive so as to find peace

Anent 1930s Austria, it is more complicated. There are very good & logical reasons for Austria & Germany to be one country. Some Austrians wanted Austrian/German unification, but didn't like Hitler, and were were willing to hold their noses.

  4. I must disagree. The Church, or at least the loudest voices in the Church, being Evangelicals, is not quiet. They are speaking up. They are speaking up loudly and fervently…but everything they're saying is falsehood. They insist that Donald Trump is blessed and sent from above, that he was thrice saved from death like Jesus before him. The voice is there, and it is leading millions into confusion and blindness.

  5. Amen ! God does not expect us to be silent. He tells us to stand for TRUTH. It is better to lose your life and find it, rather than save your life and lose it. I will die standing for what is right… Follow the cross. ❤

  6. If we see something wrong, we have a responsibility to speak up and speak out. It isn't easy. We don't want to be reacting or reacting to a reaction. But for a number of years now, the ground is being softened for someone like Trump. An example. Biden had his farewell speech on the economy. How many people know that? Was it covered live on the major networks? By a number of measures, President Biden has done well. But you wouldn't know that. And now any thing that Biden does, Trump will take credit for. Trump is a CON and nothing more.

  7. Well, we must not – they voted for it, the Catholic Church and US Catholic Bishops in the past 10 years pushed folks in the direction of trump and republicans – this is their person why would they stop now? I left the Church two years ago after 72 years in! It took me 10 years to leave, I kept saying I can stay around these folks despite their political leanings – well absolutely, I couldn't! They are not silent they are complicit and helpful! They gave the trump campaign my name and address along with everyone else's! I was floored! I called the campaign and asked where did you get my name and address? How do you even know I'm Catholic!? Anyway, from my little corner of the world!

  8. Thanks for Christian Sense. Even up here in Oz, we are being contaminated by the stupidity (SIN) being served up in the US. So sad that folks who profess to be Christian ignore our Lord's word. And worse that they seduce others into an eternity in hell. Praying for their salvation is urgent. Thanks for your clips, heartening in this post truth, post faith era. Blessings Bob

  9. Who do we speak up to? To friends & family it just starts arguments. My congressman, senator and governor are Democrat. They’re proactively working to defend against Trump policies. Who can do anything?

  11. After hearing Rachel Maddow discuss this book several years ago, I have had it in and out of my Amazon cart for several years. Timothy Snyder has been a recurring guest on MSNBC since this last election. I finally ordered it last week, expecting delivery 12/21. Looking forward to the lessons it will offer.

  12. They are not saying anything because they have a wife and children. They have years of their life going to school to earn their chosen profession. Who will stand with them? These poor souls are only being human! Stand and I will guarantee you that you will stand alone. Your so-called friends will desert you!

    Those of us with privilege…
must speak up with, must walk beside those who are marginalized simply because of the way God created them.
This support applies to all marginalized including non human persons and the Earth itself.
For if WE do not speak up and act up who shall?
    Standing up is our responsibility

  15. In the old Testament, As the Nation of Israel, fell into more and more idolatry and disobedience to God, at some point God allows them to suffer the consequences of their actions. They are either carried away into captivity or beaten severely by their enemies, or some disastrous circumstance befall them. This is the chastisment of the Lord. And he meets it out to turn their hearts back to him, and be saved! I see this situation with Trump as the same. America, and especially the believers who have fallen into the Trump cult, are looking to him to save our country. Those who believe what Trump says, that he is the "chosen one", ordained to bring our country back to God, are involved in idolatry and need to repent. We prayed fervently in 2020, and the Lord heard and gave us a reprieve. The country was healing and thriving. But the lies were powerful and by a small majority, people chose the foolish over the wise, and here we are. This time, God has allowed this country to reap what it has sown. My father used to say, "be careful what you ask for, you just might get it!" And God is allowing it. This is our time to suffer at the hands of the man they sought as a savior. This is the time for him to expose himself for who he is. This is the time for his evil plans to become exposed. Its the only way for people to realize what they have done. America, particularly American Evangelicals need to repent for trusting in a false savior and return to their first love! Those of us who know this, need to resist, yes. But we also need to be ready to be there when our loved ones come apart, realizing they were led stray. We must forgive and love them back into the family of God. The repercussions of this horrid administration and the dismantling of the American government will take all of us to undo.

  16. I’m reading about this very topic in a book called The Kingdom, The Power, and The Glory-American Evangelicals in an Age of Extremism by Tim Alberta. It talks about how preachers in the Church during the first Trump presidency were silenced and why evangelicals supported him despite his evil ways. It is reverting as it spells out how we as Christians have gotten here in a place of complicity. I highly recommend it. It just came out.

  17. It may not mean much, but there are some of us in the church (Episcopalian here) who are speaking up. It’s gotten me in trouble a few times, but nothing compared to others. It’s just that silence is complicity.

  18. Like when a parent allows the co parent to abuse children and does nothing. They become abusers themselves at that point. That happened to generations in my family line, and only the Lord can give us courage to stand up to tyrants, in my opinion.

  19. I'm sorry to tell you, Reverend, but the church has not been quiet. 'The church' has been extremely loud and the message they have been shouting is that tyranny, violence, bigotry, hate, and greed are righteous.

  20. Non Christian U.S. American here.

I LOVE hearing ANYONE IN THE WORLD speaking out and speaking up against Trump.

He tells everyone that the world is laughing at us when he is not in office. His followers believe him, even though the opposite is true.

His followers repeat the talking point, “do your own research,” while they do none.

We, U.S. Americans NEED EVERYONE IN THE WORLD to speak up. Maybe the message will get through.

Trump and his, supporters need to be made to feel as an island nation after a hurricane. They need to ask for help to get out of the mess they have made. Because help? We can give them that. We can dismantle the house of cards and haul it off. But we need them to see that it is a house of cards, and we beed them to see that their ignorance and lazy thinking led to this disaster.

The United States has never been a country unto itself. The half of our citizenry which thinks the U.S. is a country unto itself needs to wake up to the reality that it never has been. We can use all of the help we can get to turn their heads.
