SpaceX Stage 0 plans changed…
After years of anticipation, SpaceX launched the first test flight of its full-scale Starship rocket Thursday from South Texas, marking one of the biggest moments in the program’s history.
However, the world’s largest, most powerful rocket also caused some serious mayhem during its first launch. The launch pad has been completely deformed.
Due to this situation, SpaceX’s plan to conduct three Starship flights per day to colonize Mars is not feasible.
As a result, SpaceX Stage 0 plans have just completely changed!
Find out everything about this in today’s episode of Alpha Tech:
But before we start, if you’re new, don’t forget to hit the subscribe button and click the bell icon to stay updated on our latest content.
Now let’s get started:
SpaceX’s massive fully-integrated Starship launch vehicle lifted off from SpaceX’s Starbase test facility in Boca Chica, Texas on April 20.
At least three of the booster’s 33 Raptor 2 engines failed to ignite at liftoff, but with each of the others producing 500,000 pounds of force, the remaining 30 engines still managed to produce a hideous—and record-breaking—amount of lifting power. By my estimate, that’s 15 million pounds of force, but we await SpaceX’s official confirmation. By comparison, NASA’s Space Launch System rocket blasted off in November 2022 with 8.8 million pounds of thrust.
Starship then flew for just over four minutes on its first orbital test flight — complete with somersaults — before automated systems initiated a destructive abort procedure and caused the rocket to explode.

You'd think they would have learned from Nasa and had a water acoustic suppression system and a better pit to direct the blast!
The fishies did NOT think the world was ending.
You're telling me they HAD a water cooled suppressing system for Starship, but they hadn't installed it yet? Those engines failed because of the debris… and likely the 2nd stage separation as well if rocks hit the right systems. I'm really not sure how they thought the concrete would hold up at most concrete is rated for about 6.5k PSI… 8k at most. 16 million pounds came roaring down on it.
Elon, this is why nasa used water under the launch pads. Sometimes you really are wile e. Coyote
the amount of power 😳. gonna need a stronger pad.
The major reason that SpaceX hasn't got a Flame Trench planned for diverting Raptor exhaust in BC is due to the underground Water Table. A Flame Trench would need to be built Below the water table making construction very difficult, expensive & time consuming. Interestingly enough, it was the Water Table beneath the OLM & the nearly 8 sec lockdown of SS that caused such an explosion evacuation of the Tons of concrete & debris. In addition to the velocity of expanding Raptor exhaust, force and Heat there is acoustic frequency that breaks up solid concrete. The vibration of the now fractured concrete gave entrance to Superheated air causing all ground water beneath the OLM to explode into gas Instantly. There was Tons of water under the concrete that expanded instantly giving Huge chunks the gift of flight nearly straight up. I'm surprised that SS only lost the 3 engines initially, that said, it's highly likely that it was debris damage that eventually effected the next 3+ Raptors that gave up during flight. SpaceX did an Awesome job of shrouded those Raptors otherwise SS might not have even lifted off.
Saw the damage coming
Hard to see this video as anything more than empty click bait.
I can’t wait to see what the future holds for starship.
That must have been an awesome sight to see out there. I would to attend a launch some day. You all did a wonderful job getting this far. You should be VERY proud. Personally I feel just getting that beast off the pad made it a complete success. The rest was simply tests.
I would have thought with the caliber of people at spacex they would have envisioned this happening , cutting costs on a flame diverter and water deluge system obviously didn`t work IF that was the reason , maybe it wasn't the reason ?
SLS also damaged the launch pad, but not that severe as starship. So you can say neither NASA nor SpaceX is ready, to control these massive pressures, yet.
THAT IS ONE HELLAVA POWER JUST WHAT IS NEEDED.LEARN BY TRYING.
Elon did not expect FIRE to come out of his flying penis? So pointless.
Elon has given birth to the concept of Space Industry.
Property damage and loss of life are classic symptoms of a disease common in the aerospace industry; go fever. Other people smarter than Elon Musk have been launching large rockets since the evil days at Peenemunde. All he had to do was follow their lead. Whatever the significant successes of SpaceX might be, this event smacked of raw negligence and pure hubris.
Nice job. Very good description of what happened and what needs to change.
❤drop
Elon learns what NASA knew in 1953, well done.
It's called "Rocket Science" Elon, not "Rocket Roulette!"
The rocket was too successful and blew a huge hole in the ground 😅😅😅
Within 6 months they will have a successful launch of all stages.
you pivot … you adapt … you change There's only one challenge to life on this planet … if things go sideways can you get off … Elon is at the tip of that spear
Given the issue with the first trial of the SpaceX starship why is there the insistence on making it launch repeatedly from the surface of the Earth? It would seem to me to be more practical to launch it once and then maintain it in dock in high Earth orbit. Resupplying would be much more effective to service and it would also prompt construction of a new commercial -friendly platform to facilitate travel to other destinations such as the moon
If commitment could be made to that end now, construction could be well underway before the end of the falcon heavy rocket series, and long before the ISS is decommissioned in 2030!
