Space junk could take away our internet

Earth’s atmosphere is full of trash from dead satellites. If we don’t clean up low-Earth orbit, there’s a risk that the area becomes unusable. And this would mean: No internet!

  1. Every single clip and image in this video isn't just rendered, they're beyond fake. The sizes of the "debris" are exaggerated thousands to millions of times. I expect far better of you. This kind of fear mongering gets us nowhere. Showing satellites exaggerated to several kilometers long gets this conversation absolutely nowhere. DO BETTER.

  2. "no internet"? Internet mostly runs in undersea cables.
"Low earth orbit"? Space debris is mainly a problem in higher orbits due to lack of air drag (things there stay in orbit without decaying and crashing into earth basically forever), low earth orbit clears out on its own from the higher air drag in a few years.

  3. This is a bit of a reach. We absolutely need to consider this in future space projects, but I don't think that old space junk removal is of any priority right now. The volume and area proportions of earth's atmosphere is enormous, We can't easily imagine it. The true scale and proportions doesn't translate well into animated CGI

  4. Doesn't surprise me….We've almost destroyed earth with pollution and shit. Why should space be any different, everywhere we go we leave a trail of shit and pollution.

  5. Wow… Ok the topic has to be addressed, but let's be real… Put aside a few exceptions, internet doesn't rely on satellites, it still runs mainly on undersea fiber optics. Also, GPS isn't low orbit at all, these satellites orbit at 36000km ! I understand to go up there you have to cross the garbage orbit, but still, this is for a very short time, so likelihood of success can be calculated. Also, if this is a concern all of a sudden, why was starlink ever approved, with its thousands of debris to be?

  6. The animations and dialogue overstate the problem. The regulation to include cleanup already exists. This is a problem for space system operators and not something the general public needs to think about.
