I also think Naoto has issues with their gender and being young. so that's why they aren't taken seriously by the police even though they're brilliant.

Sheesh the god hand is so strong.
So Naoto is definitely the soulmate of Kanji, so to speak.
Kanji couldnt do the things he loved, like painting and crafting without people labelling him as queer cause he enjoys things that arent "manly" enough for the people around him.
Naoto explains coming from a family of detective and flatout just loves to step up as brilliant detective but society aint letting her cause police is regarded as a male oriented environment plus she's a kid in their eyes.
They both just want to do things they love to do and are pushed into opposite directions.
Kanji just lashed out and Naoto was about to just give in.
But that is not life.
Part of the problem is that you have to overcome difficulties to liberate yourself even if it is hard.
I dont know about the english but in german area is a figure of speech.

To jump over your shadow. It means to let the bad things in you and around to just rest and be better. Don't let others drag you down, dont drag yourself down.
And yes, the phrasing is about the psychological term.
Kanji and Naoto realized their surroundings and the people who judge them have no right to prevent from doing the things they enjoy.
Doesnt matter if you are a guy who enjoys hobbies not seen as manly or a girl who is pushed away cause her gender and age doesnt fit the norm of the profession she aspires for.
Dont give in, go out and enjoy your hobbies and to hell with people who mock you and put you down.
You wanna paint and knit and you are a guy? Do it.
You wanna work in a job thats usually not seen fitting the norm for certain genders? Do it.
Even if you have to take crap, do it and overcome the adversity.
Thats the message here.
Dont freak out, dont lash out and dont give in.

How I wish the Shadow Naoto pre-battle scene went:

Kanji: Yeah, but only because she still kinda looked like a girl even when she was pretending to be a guy, you know!?

To be fair, the stuff Teddie was saying at the table when Nanako was there comes across as gold-plated Chuuni Chatter, so it wouldn't be a stretch for it to be waved off as such.
