Sons of the Forest: How To Survive The First Few Days | Ultimate Beginner's Guide

Sons of the Forest is the biggest game on Steam right now, and it’s easy to see why. This survival-horror-sim features everything you could want from a game in this genre. A beautiful, dense forest full of secrets. A tactile build system that gives you the freedom to construct bases of your own design. Cannibals. Whatever the hell this thing is. And – most importantly – my perfect son, Kelvin.

But like most survival games, Sons of the Forest isn’t exactly the easiest game to understand, especially if you’ve never played anything like this before. If you’re struggling to survive on this unforgiving island then don’t worry, we here at Rock Paper Shotgun have got your back. This video will give you all the information you need to survive for those first few all-important days in Sons of the Forest. I’ll cover everything from the best place to set up a camp, how to avoid starving to death, how to befriend the mysterious Virginia and the best way to keep my boy Kelvin safe from the horrors of the unknown.

  1. I really love the idea of adding additional NPCs to help you with things like gathering resources and guarding the base. That aspect more than anything else has me wanting to give this a shot.

  2. While this is helpful, there is a point I disagree with outright, because it may be misleading & at least one early tip that I highly recommend that is excluded. First the point that is not accurate . . . the red strength icon is not your "strength" the way it is represented. Specifically on that point, it is misleading because a player could easily think that the red meter is showing the player's strength . . . what is actually going on is the red progress meter is an indicator of how close you are to leveling up your next strength level. Once the meter has been filled, your next physical act (carrying logs / chopping trees, etc.) will clear the progress meter & a number will appear briefly to show the player's new strength level (which also increases overall health). The tips I would include would be going to the purple icon that is close to grab a full flashlight, then downhill & to the left to the camp to grab an upgraded axe from the chest of a dead man in that camp. From there, I would also include — going to the nearby cave to grab the zipgun & entering that close beacon to use the 3d printer for a canteen as a minimum. All of this should take about 30 minutes . . . at which point Combat / drinking / wood gathering will all become significantly more manageable.
