For any long running series, one of the most common topics amongst the hardcore fans would: how do all the games fit in chronological order? Some franchises make that easy, just going from the first installment to the most recent one, however others are more complicated. Sonic the Hedgehog, is one of the complicated ones. So, to conclude the Sonic Retrospective, I am going to dig deep and explain the Sonic mythos, how I see it, across three videos, this being the second of three where I shall dive into the 2000s of Sonic…and it gets complicated quick.

  1. Fun fact about Free Riders being absent in the encyclo-speed-ia, someone asked Ian Flynn on his podcast why it was absent, and I’m pretty sure his answer was he just forgot about it lol

  2. I just thought of something:
What if sonic free riders takes place AFTER the metal virus arc but before the chao racing arc ? Omega would be in pieces, so shadow and rouge temporarily recuit e-10000 b as a team dark member.

  3. This is about sonic frontiers. You are a bad person to call it bad. It is a good game. I mean the real sonic said this is his favourite sonic game in his latest twitter takeover. Firstly, its a new experiment from Sega and its executed it well enough. You said the game is not polished, there is such things calld patches and updates which fixes bugs in games like god of war, mario, spider-man, and of course sonic. So stop being a crap boll at sonic. Sega is trying to make the best sonic game that they can and will never stop trying. So my point is, can I get an apology of all the mental torture you gave me for the last few weeks from your stupid sonic frontiers video? You must reply!

  4. It makes sense for people to mistake Shadow for Sonic because they DO look alike. They use the same bad model even. (Especially Super Sonic and Shadow/Super Shadow)
Speaking of which, not only do I remember casuals calling Shadow “evil Sonic” cuz he just looks like a dark Sonic, but if the world just saw Sonic transform into a flying yellow hedgehog with a changed hairstyle, I feel like seeing a speedy anyhro hedgehog go after a chaos emerald and assuming it’s Sonic isn’t that far fetched since the color and hairstyle doesn’t matter that much. Especially with the same body type and general facial structure.

Project Shadow is also classified Top Secret and it’s been made clear that modern day GUN don’t know about Shadow. Commander Tower does but for all we know, he either wasn’t commander at this time or only had his childhood memories to go on and didn’t connect that this was the same thing until after Shadow became more well known to the world. He wouldn’t know about Project Shadow itself or that they had it hidden on Prison Island. He’d have no reason to just think of those memories when he spends his current life only knowing of Sonic. Especially when he doesn’t know Shadow’s abilities. He doesn’t even know Shadow’s name but by Shadow The Hedgehog 2005 he does, because Shadow is well known by then and he was able to connect that it’s the same thing from his past.

I also really doubt they’d settle on a story meant to be about a villain that looks like Sonic and simultaneously settle on a design they didn’t think looked like Sonic. Rushed or not, they would stick to designs that looked like Sonic. No reason not to. People are just so used to Sonic and Shadow as separate characters they refuse to acknowledge their similarities. lol

  5. i think the reason he didn’t kill sonic at first is because 1. sonic and elise didn’t have a big bond and 2. mephilis is a manipulator. there was a video that goes deep in his character that i will link the the comments under this comment

this fact is always so fun to think about
there was so, so much technological advancement in those 10 years. and then you compare the graphics of something like generations to frontiers, with 11 years between those games, and it makes one wonder why we're even getting new video game consoles, lol

  7. In regards to 06, I was always under the impression it was meant to be like a reboot because I specifically saw the word “reboot” describing the game before it came out. Something about how it could be a chance to reboot the game. But they never specifically said that it would be. However, I did hear later that they said it wasn’t canon. Then I heard people argue that it was (including possibly on an earlier version of the timeline from this channel. I forget). But while it’s not clear, the story literally erases itself from the final continuity. Which is easily possibly what they mean as well. So I take it as all this is canon and did happen, but it was undone so it’s LIKE it isn’t canon and never happened.

In Shadow’s story, there’s a mission that implies he’s been a GUN agent for a few years now. I take it as the possibility that the history with the characters in this game are different from the main timeline just like meeting Silver and Blaze in this game are different than in the main timeline where you meet them in Rush and Rivals.

2 Omegas existing at once is kind’ve a given. No explanation needed.

Blaze went to another dimension in 06 I believe according to the dialogue.

Sonic wasn’t murdered. Elise says “I don’t think he’s dead yet”
Which is why they decide to get the emeralds to save him. Prior to that, they’d lost hope because they thought he was dead. If he were actually dead, they woulda just said “he’s dead but maybe we can save him” but instead it was “he’s dead. Hope is lost. Wait. He’s not dead yet, so maybe we can save him”.

  8. The plot hole of Mephilis not just fusing with his other half is simply explained. Mephilis could have won at any moment. He was just too sadistic and enjoyed everyone running around like they actually had a chance of beating him.

  9. On the Riders note, I think it's safe to say that Riders is not 100% canon as it frankly existed to be a experimental spin off.
However much like how the comics and Boom are also separate brands that doesn't mean versions of those characters or events can't be pulled into the gaming continuity.
With Sega's stance of Canon being the way it is these callbacks likely exist just to say "hey these characters exist here too, in their own way." but not strictly "these stories happened and are canon."
They can affect and add onto the series without being tied to it narratively. If we get a chance to see mainline Babylons, Sticks, and Tangle they'll likely jave their own reasons for being in the main narrative now.

Ah yes, well I think it's safe to say pretty much any project is meant to "be a success" and also "make a lot of money" like those examples he gave.
However, that does not address *what* Sonic 06 was meant to be. lmao

  11. I mean, for the whole Sonic and Shadow mixup, it actually makes perfect sense' considering with zero context to the Sonic series, a lot of people would assume that's some new for Sonic has especially since it's probably well known at this point that Sonic can turn super so to random people who don't know a thing about these guys other than their existence and some things they can do, Shadow is just Sonic but with a different form similar to Super Sonic who's silhouette is nearly identical to Shadow.

  12. You kept on calling chaos a “evolved chao” which really bugged me because in frontiers it makes it clear that the chao are the evolved ancients which are the same species as chaos. Doesn’t matter but it bugged me.

  13. I know that this is mostly just for fun but I noticed a few things you mentioned that have been retconned or otherwise have contradictions so I figured I'd point them out.

A: In the last episode you didn't bring up Mania, I assume that's because in the next video you're going to talk about how Gens branched the timeline for Classic who then experienced Mania, but according to Ian Flynn as of a few days ago, any form of Classic Sonic being a different version of Sonic has been entirely retconned, he is now back to just being the past version of Sonic with no alternate dimension, NOR split timeline. Meaning that Modern Sonic also experienced Mania (This does muddle up why Sonic doesn't remember meeting his future self though. With generations I would be willing to chalk it up to Wobbly Wobbly Timey Whimey amnesia but Forces does what it does best in ruins everything.)

B: You also mentioned that Tikal and Chaos passed on to the afterlife, but this has actually been untrue for a while. Despite it contradicting SA2's breaking of the Master Emerald, Chaos was actually just sealed back in there, just with a cleared mind, as seen in Sonic Battle, and the Sonic Forces: Prologue Comic where Knuckles casually refers to him (I know you said you weren't considering extended media but this is a pretty major instance). Tikal also evidently didn't die, although she's a little more up in the air. Ian Flynn confirmed that she's in the list of usable characters, but in what form she currently exists is unknown.

C: G.U.N. doesn't answer to the president (Not an SA2 anyway.) They're not affiliated with any government, they're a completely independent military force. That's why Rouge butted heads with them on Prison Island, she wasn't actually affiliated with them in any way until she actually joined them in '06.

D: It's a small detail but in the files of Heroes, Knuckles and Tails during the Metal Overlord fight ARE Actually referred to as "Super Knuckles" and "Super Tails". So these are supposed to be their super forms, They just look really lame for some reason.
