I'd like to know what unexpected radioactivity has lasted several thousand years. Highly radioactive isotopes are necessarily shorter lived than slightly radioactive ones like plutonium 239, half life 24,000 years which was proof of a water-moderated natural fission reactor. Uranium 233 is also a neutron capture product, fissile like Pu-239, half life 160,000 years. It's a long time since I learned the fact that a large enough bolide has impact energy enough to create radioactivity, but not necessarily radioactive waste.
My immediate thought that if such an atomic event happened there would be strong evidence of high levels of very long 'half life' radioactive isotopes that would be many tens of tens of thousands of years. I am not aware of any reports indicating such levels of contamination but there does seem to have been some catastrophic event giving rise to multiple earthquakes, very high heat from volcanic activity or vast flare from the sun, this and combined sea rise by anything up to 400 feet as ice melted.
The Universe is over 14 billion years old, with some 92 billion miles of space, and is in constant flux both creating and dying solar systems. The Earth is only one small part of the WHOLE system. We most likely have created wonderful civilizations and destroyed just as many due to our sinful nature. Our original sin, our inclination to not trust or doubt the existence of the ONE God who created us, by our desire to remake the world in our own image.
