Surprise was changed. Each enemy rolls separately for initiative and surprise, so you no longer get surprise on all at once. It makes initiative buffs far more important and frankly was something that we asked for repeatedly, as previously surprise was far too powerful.

Did the Spirit Eagle bite the ape in the nuts? Or poke its butt? That's sure what it looked like in its first attack in that fight. No wonder its attack buff got all messed up. All the PTSD it suffered. :p

Now imagine the giant ape! CR 7 and one of the best forms for polymorph and shapechange. And there is a quest for hunting a one!
Scale mail +1 is by 1 stronger AC than breast plate. Not before identified mind you.
I know Barb works fine with heavy armor but man it's not the loincloth berserker I know.
You might consider ranged secondaries for your party. Definitely helps kite enemies too you. They were lifesavers in early CRPGS like Baldurs Gate and Ivewind Dale.
You know; "Speagle" sounds a lot like the german "Spiegel", which is mirror. Which in turn is funny, seeing how damage is mirrored back to the caster. 😀

Have you checked out Warhammer 40,000: Chaos Gate – Daemonhunters yet? I proper "XCOM" style take on 40k would be cool, but I don't know… the art style seems a bit off? Bit too "Fortnight", I mean… you can give a Space Marine in Terminator Armour green eyebrows!
FYI, I think running a few Solasta Lost Valley episodes with some of your raiders controlling your party members would be fun 🙂
I think that damned block is put there solely to remind you that falling to your death is a real possibility. Glad to see I wasn't the only guy that got wiped there.

I'm assuming you hit a hot key to loot the rest of the items in the spot where you found the magic armor. Otherwise, you left behind a scroll, a bow, and some arrows I think.
at first I was againt the "we play the fighter as a wannabe wizard" concept of Ebon.
It has grown on me to a surprising degree.
To the point that I want to play it in actual 5e… but then everyone will just roll godly stats except me
im fairly certain that a +1 scalemail should be stronger than a breatplate. Both are 14+dex(2), the enchantment should make the scale stronger
