This Sunday night, the Springboks and France played out maybe the best game of rugby I’ve ever seen in my life. A frantic, fast, tactical battle, how did South Africa manage to come out on top?

  2. Loved this analysis, you explained it in a way that I finally understand a teeny bit of the brilliant minds behind this crazy game with the odd shaped ball. Thanks ❤
Rugby is most certainly the winner after this match

A few weeks ago I would have begged for one. But after witnessing this charade, I will not go to the stadium. Let them stay between them, these sold!!

  5. 6mn: attempt to intercept Etzebeth on the pass from Penaud to Ramos 5 meters from the line. The South African player misses his interception and cannot take the ball that falls to the ground in front of his support foot. It is an unquestionable forward that annihilates a try ball. The penalty for this kind of fault is a try-penalty + yellow card minimum. TMO is not used and referees rely on their first impression: attempt to pass back ! Never seen that !

7mn: 1st try SA of Arendse. Up and Under of Reinach to Etzebeth and Arendse. Ollivon and Ficou at the reception in defense. Arendse doesn’t care about playing the ball or jumping, but pushes Ollivon without the ball, into the back. Ollivon, unbalanced in his impulse, hits Ficou who releases the ball for Arendse who followed outside and recovers it to score. Try ! <try! Or rather a nice "bowling strike. The try should not have been validated. Again the TMO does not intervene.

15mn : penalty of Ramos on the pole. During the run of Ramos, Vermeulen 10 meters from the shooter, raises his arms to the sky to disturb him, which is formally forbidden. Moreover, the referee reprimands him "kindly" and aside, but the penalty is not replayed. Thus, even when the referee sees the fault, he shows an incredible clemency !

16mn : head shot by Dutoit on Danty, stuck on the ground in the ruck. Danty is affected and gets treated. Dangerous game" ! it's minimum a yellow card (even red if intentionality is demonstrated). On the contrary, the penalty is given to the SA team and Dutoit remains on the field.

22mn: transformation of Ramos countered by Kolbe. Waiting for Kolbe with foot on the line, so offside. Kolbe starts his race before Ramos starts his race to the ball to shoot his transformation. By the time Ramos starts the first of his three steps towards the ball, Kolbe has already entered the field at least 5 meters. Again, the TMO is not consulted and the decision is made on an "impression" of the referees located more than 20 meters from the action! The transformation should have been replayed.

67mn : penalty of Pollard on decision of contest winner of Smith following a tackle of Woki. But Smith is not on his supports. At the time of scratching, his right hand is well laid flat on the ground while his left hand is placed on the ball. The context is illegal. Smith prevented Woki from releasing the ball to his partners. The penalty should have been reversed.

In addition, there is much talks of the immense pressure exerted by the SA on the rucks, thus preventing the French from posing their very creative game.
It was an excellent tactic, which bore fruit, but it was such that the SA were forced to put themselves at fault in order to be effective.
The referees and TMO let it go and this attitude reversed the game to the advantage of the SA.
In the end, the SA imposed their game without worrying about their many irregularities, seeing that the referees were on their side.

When a match ends at a point of gap and refereeing decisions on decisive phases of play are taken systematically against the same team, there are reasons to question the bias of the arbitration and its impact on the scoreboard. We must question the silence of the TMO which is not called and never intervenes in these contentious phases. When you don’t want to contradict the referee, it’s easy not to show the images. Except that today everyone can review the game, get their own idea and see the incredible scam that the French team was victim.

So we can always analyze the strategy brilliantly, go back on tactical details that made the difference by 1 point in the game, but when fairness is thus violated, we can not be satisfied with the result without saying anything.

It would be interesting to have the same very fine videos of analysis, made by all these commentators on Youtube, but this time on the details of the deficiencies of All the arbitration. With complete impartiality, of course … I have no doubt what will come out of it !

  6. Well, hmm, if you like, you know, slow the squidges down to 75, it's like you begin to see how they do it, and like, oh you know, it's not that great after all… now fancy that…

  7. To everyone that blames the ref, because Dupont said so, the ref was bad on both sides and it be awesome if you take those glasses off. At the end of the day South Africa earned that win and France panicked at the end of the game.
